Abstract
Considers the problem of structures’ sensitivities to prescribed displacements uncertainties through the use of fuzzy numbers. Important properties of fuzzy subsets have been studied and used to model uncertainties, and to solve the fuzzy linear system resulting from taking into account the uncertainties on prescribed displacements. Develops a computer program to allow comparisons between several structural designs checking common specifications. Demonstrates the effectiveness of the present method for a cantilever structure modelled in the case of a static finite element analysis.

Abstract
Purpose
Entrepreneurial ventures in the emerging renewable energy sector in China represent a variety of dynamic growth strategies that are stimulated by the domestic energy policy and the evolution of the value chain driven by technological advancements. This paper aims to examine the underlying real options among these first movers to proceed with their further strategic development and finance means.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature review is launched to look into the emerging renewable energy sector unveiling challenges in the growth and development of renewable energy ventures (REVs) in China. Three main types of REVs are differentiated based on their technology intensity.
Findings
The prospect of international technology transfer through mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the next phase of evolution within the sector is articulated. A theoretical framework on complementary developments in the value chain is revealed with four propositions.
Practical implications
This paper enables the stakeholders in the renewable energy sector to critically reexamine the pathways of strategic development and finance of REVs over an evolving technological landscape.
Originality/value
This study integrates the theoretical real options into technology management issues pertinent to REVs under the contemporary tactics via cross‐border M&As.

Abstract
A study was carried out to determine the nature of medical prescribing errors identified by pharmacists in an NHS Hospital Trust. From the 587 errors detected in a one‐month period, eight were potentially grave, 151 were potentially very serious, 351 were potentially moderately serious and 77 were comparatively minor. This extrapolated to 7,044 prescribing problems a year and an estimated detected prescribing error rate of approximately 0.35 to 0.7 per cent. Pharmacists detected 63 per cent of these errors while working on wards and 36 per cent while in dispensaries. The main causes of errors were failure to obtain an accurate medication history, oversight and prescribing uncertainty. In the absence of guidelines, there was a tendency for the isolated hard‐pressed prescriber to guess or prescribe on a “that looks about right somehow” basis. This study has made medical staff more aware of the areas where they are most vulnerable to making prescribing errors. In addition, greater support is now being offered to junior doctors in checking medication histories and in creating prescribing guidelines.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent of consumer trust of physicians’ prescription of branded medications.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper adopts a qualitative research approach to study consumers’ self-reported experiences with respect to their trust in physicians’ prescription of branded medications. An open-interview approach and a focus group discussion were adopted in collecting research evidence from a sample of middle-level executives from various Ghanaian industries who have experienced physicians’ prescription of branded medications.
Findings
Consumers have mix reactions toward physicians’ prescriptions of branded medicines. Whereas some trust, others are uncertain, while some do not trust physicians at all. The last group believes the physicians are serving the interest of third parties in prescribing branded medications.
Research limitations/implications
This study focuses only on patients’ perspectives. This research could be widened to include other important stakeholders of healthcare delivery such as physicians, pharmacists and management of health institutions.
Practical implications
The study provides a platform for physicians to appreciate the trust their clients repose in them as they prescribe medication to them.
Social implications
It is envisaged that the research will assist consumers of branded medications to probe into why branded medications are insisted on to be purchased instead of alternatives.
Originality/value
This study provides further perspectives on consumer reactions to physicians’ prescription of branded medications.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe and contextualize the processes of leadership development through mentoring in a Leadership Learning Lab (“the Lab”) and to explore the implications and applications of the Lab's approach as a social learning space.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors used a constructivist grounded theoretical approach and conducted semi-structured interviews with participants in the Lab, which operated out of a leadership center in a mid-sized Canadian business school.
Findings
The findings show that participants used their individual life experiences to practice leadership development through mentoring in a social learning space of prescribed uncertainty. The participants identified with becoming flexible, self-actualized leaders by learning to view their own experiences and those of their Lab partners through a leadership lens.
Originality/value
This study contributes to an understanding of the “doing” of leadership development in a social learning space and highlights three relational processes through which leadership development emerged through mentoring: rapport-building, democratization and reflection.

Abstract
Purpose
After the effective date of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) 15, the accounting treatment of credit card rewards programmes (CCRPs) is no longer explicitly prescribed. Uncertainty regarding what constitutes faithful representation, and the inconsistent accounting practices observed, has created a need for guidance on the appropriate accounting treatment of CCRP transactions. Accounting theory has the potential to provide the foundation for this guidance. As a result, the objective of this study was to develop a theoretical model for the accounting treatment of CCRP transactions using accounting theory.
Design/methodology/approach
This non-empirical qualitative conceptual study utilised document analysis, focussing specifically on accounting theory, to construct an accounting treatment model.
Findings
Applying the relevant accounting theory (International Accounting Standards Board's (IASB's) Conceptual Framework), a theoretical model for the accounting treatment of CCRP transactions was developed, which emphasises the importance of understanding the economic phenomenon (the CCRP transaction) and determining how management views the transaction (in isolation as marketing or as an integral part of the credit card transaction).
Originality/value
Addressing the problem of accounting for CCRP transactions with reference to accounting theory (which is the main element of scholarly activity in accounting) distinguishes this study from previous research on the topic. The CCRP accounting treatment theoretical model could assist CCRP management in faithfully accounting for a CCRP transaction and reduce uncertainty and inconsistency in practice. Moreover, this study identified the procedures to be employed when using accounting theory to determine the appropriate accounting treatment of business transactions. These procedures could be employed by accountants when faced with other transactions not covered by specific accounting standards.

Purpose
The role of patient’s characteristics in the prescribing decision of physicians comprises two major constructs: drug request and expectations. The purpose of this paper was to examine the existing literature on patient characteristics and then explore the circumstances that reinforce the connection between patient characteristics (drug requests and expectations) and physician prescribing decision.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey of the literature was carried out across online databases from 1994 to 2015, and 25 reviewed articles were identified. The influence of patient factors on physician prescribing decisions was identified in the articles. A conceptual model to investigate the patient characteristics that influence physicians’ prescribing decision was the developed.
Findings
There have been numerous studies on the effect of patient characteristics on physician prescription decision. Some studies discovered patient’s request for drug and expectations strongly influence physicians’ prescribing decision, whereas others found only minor or no relation. To resolve this ambiguity, there is a need to precisely understand how patient factors affect prescribing decisions of physicians, under different contexts and conditions. This review contends that contextual variables – drug characteristics, drug cost/benefits ratio and physician habit persistence – are determining factors in this debate.
Research limitations/implications
The study recommends further studies on the influence of each factor on physician prescribing behaviour and an evaluation of the proposed model and moderating variables.
Originality/value
This paper is the first significant step towards recognizing contextual variables that may moderate the relationship between a patient’s drug request and expectations and prescribing behaviour. This research contributes to resolving the debate on the ways patient factors affect prescribing behaviour.

Abstract
Purpose
Although there is evidence that the efforts of pharmaceutical marketing exert a positive and significant influence on physician prescription decisions, the specific mechanisms by which this impact occurs remain uncertain. To address this issue, this study aims to investigate whether the physician’s habit persistence may explain the relationship between marketing efforts such as brand attributes and drug promotion and prescribing behavior. This study also explores whether there was any significant difference between specialists and general practitioners (GPs) regarding the effect of brand attributes and drug promotion on physician’s habit persistence, which influences prescribing behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey instrument was administered to physicians, encompassing specialists in a particular field and GPs who provide primary care services. A nonparametric partial least squares multigroup analysis was used to analyze 393 valid responses using partial least squares-structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results indicate that the decision to prescribe the drug may be affected by the physician’s habit persistence in the presence of vital brand attributes and drug promotion. The relationship between physician’s habit persistence and prescribing behavior is significant in GPs and specialist groups. The findings also reveal that brand attributes are the most influential and significant determinant of physician’s habit persistence in the GPs group. In addition, physician specialists are more aware of the influence of drug promotion initiatives than GPs. Furthermore, this study discovered that the relationship between drug promotion and physician’s habit persistence indicates a significant difference between specialists and GPs.
Originality/value
Although several marketing scholars discuss the factors influencing prescribing behavior, a few studies have shown the role of brand attributes and drug promotion and their effect on physician’s habit persistence. This study will specifically contribute by examining the mediating role of physician’s habit persistence between marketing efforts and prescribing behavior. In addition, so far, no studies have effectively made a comparative analysis across physicians regarding the effect of marketing efforts on physician’s habit persistence and prescribing behavior.

The purpose of this paper is to present a clear path to securitize the longevity risk with two distinct swaps in order to inspire a new Chinese life market.
Design/methodology/approach
Studies on longevity risk securitization consist of three aspects, respectively, instrument design, pricing methodology and mortality projection. The swaps designed are referenced, respectively, to vanilla and complex survivor swaps (Dowd et al., 2006; Lin and Cox, 2005). Methods applied are RHH model and Gompertz law for mortality projection, as well as two-factor Wang transformation for pricing.
Findings
This paper figures out the market price of risk in Chinese annuity market, checks for the sensitivity of the price to parameters and tests the hedging effects by Monte Carlo simulation.
Originality/value
Based on the theoretical and numerical results, this paper suggests an effective way to possibly witness the birth of New Life Market in China.

Abstract
This paper presents a new framework to predict a structure’s effective properties and sensitivities to multiple simultaneous uncertain endogenous parameters. The methodology is based on the use of fuzzy sets and this paper extends the fuzzy set theory to a dynamic finite element analysis of engineering systems containing uncertainty on material properties. A general algorithm, which can resolve the uncertain eigenvalue problem by using a Neumann expansion, is studied. This algorithm is applied to the study of the modal behavior of structures presenting uncertain material properties. Finally, the entropy and the specificity of fuzzy responses lead to the identification of a plate structure’s most sensitive eigenvalue to uncertain sources.
