Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates how individuals' self-awareness (specifically, private and public self-awareness) and environment-awareness (perceived expertise, similarity and familiarity) shape herd behavior, encompassing discounting one’s information and imitating others. Drawing from latent state-trait theory, this research aims to discern the impact of these factors on purchase intention and behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Longitudinal data from 231 users in Xiaohongshu, China’s leading social commerce platform, were collected to test the proposed model and hypotheses.

Findings

The findings from this study show that private self-awareness negatively influences discounting one’s own information and imitating others. Public self-awareness positively affects imitating others, while it does not affect discounting one’s own information. Perceived expertise diminishes discounting one’s own information but does not significantly affect imitating others. Perceived similarity and perceived familiarity are positively related to discounting one’s own information and imitating others. The results confirm different interaction effects between self-awareness and environment-awareness on herd behavior.

Originality/value

First, this contributes back to the latent state-trait theory by expanding the applicability of this theory to explain the phenomenon of herd behavior. Second, this study takes an important step toward theoretical advancement in the extant literature by qualifying that both self- and environment-awareness should be considered to trigger additional effects on herd behavior. Third, this study provides a more enlightened understanding of herd behavior by highlighting the significance of considering the interplay between self- and environment-awareness on herd behavior. Finally, this study also empirically confirms the validity of classifying self-awareness into private and public aspects.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the significant potential of digital content marketing (DCM) to establish public and professional awareness, especially in uncertain situations, no previous research has investigated how to plan business-to-business DCM to help firms and society get through a crisis. Thus, this study aims to offer an integrative framework for providing valuable information for managing uncertainty, particularly during the pandemic crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

Through the lens of business awareness, this research explores relevant content types that can help firms and society get through the pandemic crisis. For this, the systematic review of 52 articles appearing in publication outlets for more than one decade (2010 to 2021) was conducted.

Findings

Based on the findings from the literature review, this paper identified two main categories of valuable content types for firms and society during the pandemic, namely, business-centered content types to enhance industrial environment awareness and human-centered content types to raise emotional awareness during the pandemic crisis.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research delivers the first scientific article that focuses on presenting an integrative framework for providing valuable content types helping firms and society to manage uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper's purpose is to highlight the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives taken by the Indian Banking Industry, which can help them to enhance their overall performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based on the survey questionnaire, administered to 33 public‐private sector banks in Northern Haryana, including its capital Chandigarh, which has been analyzed with the help of descriptive statistics and factor analysis.

Findings

The findings suggest that banks have an objective view‐point about CSR activities. They are concentrating mainly on education, balanced growth (different strata of society), health, environmental marketing and customer satisfaction as their core CSR activities. The Indian banking industry is found to be adopting an integrated approach by combining CSR with the ultimate customer satisfaction. Irrespective of location, the nature of CSR activities undertaken by banks is found to be similar.

Research limitations/implications

The study was conducted on 33 banks. As the banks are undertaking CSR activities under the guidance of their respective head office, this perhaps generalizes its usefulness elsewhere.

Practical implications

As CSR improves the performance of banks in terms of goodwill, social image and expanding business, this may be a fruitful example for other industries as well.

Originality/value

This paper observes that the work done for society may pass on the advantages to the corporate world and initiatives in this area may enhance the value.

Abstract

Purpose

It was aimed to propose and test a theoretical model to evaluate how some dimensions of environmental awareness influence the intention of consuming organic products using gender as a control variable.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was developed through quantitative methodology with the use of multivariate data analysis (PLS-SEM). The model uses a second-order construct. Although, it was conducted in a nonprobabilistic way using a convenience sample, with 213 university students.

Findings

It was confirmed the relation between the environmental awareness dimensions' influence and the intention to buy organic products that is also influenced according to the consumers' gender. There is a more positive effect and intensity in the organics' purchase by women.

Research limitations/implications

The nonprobabilistic nature in addition to the use of the convenience sample, factors that do not allow the generalization of the results, are some limitations. Moreover, the dimensions of environmental awareness proposed do not include all of the motivators about the organic consumption.

Practical implications

The results identified the factors that motivate the intention to consume organic products in Brazilian context and can contribute to managerial strategies formulation in order to increase the value perceived by the customer in relation to the consumption of these products.

Originality/value

This paper presents a deeper understanding about the dynamics between the factors that can guide the choice for organic products, besides providing a greater theoretical and empirical support tested by the use of a second-order construct.

Abstract

Identifies a number of critical spouse/partner preparation and adjustment factors derived from a larger study that examined the expatriate career management practices of 20 Australian business enterprises with a physical presence in the East‐Asian business region. Addresses concerns expressed by Adler (1991) that attention to the needs of an accompanying spouse is at best only having a neutral impact on spouse adjustment. That is, organizations have largely failed to assist spouses in establishing what Adler (1991) described as “a meaningful portable life”. Reviews spouse/partner preparation and adjustment from the views expressed by Australian business executives, expatriate and repatriates involved in business operations in East‐Asia. The views of spouses and partners were not gathered in this study. Results point to the need for re‐assessment of existing spouse/partner preparation and adjustment. While results are tentative, evidence from this study confirms the need for more attention by Australian organizations to spouse/partner preparation and adjustment, with particular attention to the development of business environment awareness and empathy which may assist in advancing Adler’s concept of “a meaningful portable life”.

Abstract

Purpose

The study seeks to examine how a short intervention, aimed at enhancing occupational choice skills, influences turnover during the early stages of organizational membership. It seeks to explore two theoretical rationales for this effect: social exchange and self‐determination.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is a “constructive replication” of previous research, and it employed a similar field experimentation methodology. Groups of candidates in the Technical School of the Israeli Air Force were randomly assigned to experimental (Decision Making Training) and control groups. Perceived Organizational Support and turnover were measured at two points in time.

Findings

The results showed that the intervention reduced turnover (relative to a control group) as measured at two points in time – at the end of a technical training program and six months later into their military service. Perceived Organizational Support was not enhanced by the intervention. The experimental results were consistent with the self‐determination explanation more than with the social exchange explanation.

Practical implications

The practical benefits of Decision Making Training during early encounters with the organization are discussed. Decision Making Training is recommended as an effective tool during the career exploration phase, to facilitate the integration of self and environment awareness and to enhance self‐determined career goals.

Originality/value

Provides further evidence of the usefulness of a simple intervention that reduces early turnover.

Abstract

Purpose

The main goal of any organization is to achieve the best quality of work through employees, and managers play a very important role in this field. Managers and leaders of organizations often face with paradoxes that make decision-making difficult. The purpose of this paper is to develop a competency model for human resource managers considering the importance of the role of paradoxes for organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The research methodology is of a mixed type and with an approach based on paradox theory and using theme analysis and fuzzy Delphi, it seeks to provide a model of paradoxical managers’ competence. The statistical sample included 11 experts working in the information and communication technology industry, who were selected using the snowball and judgmental sampling method.

Findings

The results of this research show that the competency model of human resource managers has three managerial, organizational and individual levels and has 15 themes including strategic partner, organizational knowledge, awareness of the industry environment, awareness of the external environment, paradoxical thinking, managerial knowledge, relationship management, resource management , leadership, human resources analyzer, information technology (IT) knowledge, personality traits, development, multitasking and cognitive competence. The most important theme identified is paradoxical thinking and familiarity with IT knowledge, and it is suggested that human resource managers working in this field should preferably study technical and engineering fields at the undergraduate level and shift to human resource management fields at the graduate level.

Originality/value

The distinguishing feature of this paper is the presentation of a competency model based on paradox theory. Paradoxes are part of organizational life. Therefore, there should be a paradoxical view in all organizational analysis.

Abstract

In this study the Repertory Grid interview technique was used to investigate constructs of leadership held by a group of male and female senior managers from within hospice and Specialist Palliative Care Units (SPCUs) in the UK. The themes that emerged were compared with those from existing research models of leadership. Results: men and women in these roles describe different constructs of effective leadership. The women’s constructs that emerged were predominantly transformational, whilst the men’s were predominantly transactional. Themes were also identified in this study, which differed from previous studies, i.e. those of political and environment awareness and the valuing of others’ views regardless of their status. These themes do not feature highly in other research, and may be in response to the environment within which hospice and specialist palliative care functions.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental awareness among students in middle and high schools in an industrial city (Yanbu, Saudi Arabia).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was distributed to 279 students in three schools of the city. Both perception of different environment issues and attitude towards the environment were assessed. Different sources of information about the environment were searched. Comparison of the degree of environmental awareness according to age and gender was investigated.

Findings

Results indicated girls to be more knowledgeable than boys. The results also showed that TV and internet are the most important sources of information about the environment.

Practical implications

This study can be important in identifying the level of environmental awareness among students in an industrial city and the different factors that affect this awareness.

Originality/value

To the author's knowledge, research studies investigating the environmental awareness of school students in the industrial areas in the Middle East are very few.

Abstract

Today’s growing concern in environment awareness forces manufacturers to strive for implementing competitive strategies in environmental management. With the introduction of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) standard in 1996, many manufacturing companies are facing a decision problem of whether or not to implement the ISO 14001 based EMS. The authors have studied the critical success factors to be considered by the Hong Kong manufacturers in this regard. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology is used in the study to formulate an appropriate model to evaluate success factors and develop strategies to implement ISO 14001 based EMS in Hong Kong manufacturing companies. The model is also used to evaluate the benefits/costs ratios of implementing ISO based EMS and to decide whether or not to implement it. As the results of the model indicated, the ISO 14001 based EMS should be implemented in Hong Kong by manufacturing companies to improve their environmental performance and sustain the competitive position in the global market place, regardless of the considerable costs incurred from its implementation. This is supported by a relatively larger benefits/costs ratio with respect to implementing ISO 14001 based EMS than that of the contrary. This paper reports the findings of the study.
