Abstract

Purpose

Data transformation has prompted enterprises to rethink their strategic development. Scholars have frequently acknowledged the vast potential value of supply chain data and realised that simply owning data resources cannot guarantee excellent innovation performance (IP). Therefore, this study focussed on the mediating and moderating issues between data-driven supply chain orientation (DDSCO) and IP. More specifically, the purpose was to explore (1) whether DDSCO promotes enterprise innovation through dynamic and improvisational capabilities and (2) how information complexity (INC) plays a moderating role between capabilities and performance.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study was performed using the results of a questionnaire survey, and a literature review was used to build the premises of this study. A sample was conducted on 296 Chinese enterprises, and the data collected were used to test the hypothesis by successive regression.

Findings

This research has implications for the theoretical development of DDSCO, as well as the dynamic capabilities (DC) and improvisation capabilities (IC) in innovation strategic literature. The empirical results show that DDSCO has a direct, positive impact on both DC and IC, which thus positively impact IP. Meanwhile, IC has a negative moderating effect on the path joining DC and IP. Conversely, IC has a positive moderating effect on the path joining IC and IP.

Research limitations/implications

Although this study has limitations, it also creates opportunities for future research. The survey comes from different industries, so the possibility of unique influences within industries cannot be ruled out. Second, the authors' survey is based on cross-sectional data, which allow for more comprehensive data verification in the future. Third, this study also provides opportunities for future research, because it proves that DC and IC, as partial mediators of DDSCO and IP, can mine other paths of the data-driven supply chain in IP. For example, the perspective of the relationship between supply chain members, knowledge perspective, etc.

Practical implications

The research findings offer a novel perspective for enterprise managers. First, enterprises can leverage supply chain data to gain competitive advantages in innovation. Second, it is imperative for enterprises to acknowledge the significance of developing dynamic and IC. This also requires enterprises to acknowledge innovations in DDSCO necessitate a focus on dynamic and IC. Third, it is recommended that managers take into account both sides of IC and encourage enterprises to prioritise the utilisation of IC.

Originality/value

Empirical research results revealed how DDSCO improves IP and is an extension of digital transformation in the supply chain field, providing new opportunities and challenges for enterprise innovation. It can also expand the enterprise's understanding of DDSCO. Second, based on resource-based theory, it is possible to develop and test theoretical arguments regarding the importance of dynamic and IC as intermediaries in the DDSCO-IP. Third, the authors conducted simulations of highly dynamic data environments to develop and test theoretical arguments about the importance of IC as a moderator of capabilities-performance relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the resource orchestration perspective, this study aims to explore whether and how strategic supply management (SSM) affects firms’ operational performance (OP) and innovation performance (IP).

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data comprising 404 valid responses are collected from traditional manufacturing firms in China. Confirmatory factor analysis confirms the reliability and validity of the measures. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping are used to test all hypotheses.

Findings

SSM improves firms’ OP and IP. Furthermore, supply base resource mobilization (SBRM) and supply market resource mobilization (SMRM) have partial mediating effects on the relationships. SBRM has a greater effect on OP, while SMRM has a greater effect on IP. In addition, these two types of resource mobilization form different mediating paths between SSM and firm performance, and environmental uncertainty positively moderates this relationship.

Originality/value

With the development of national innovation strategies such as the “Made in China 2025” plan, the Chinese manufacturing industry aims to move from low-cost manufacturing to innovative and high-quality manufacturing. The study’s findings further emphasize the role of purchasing and supply management in external resource management. In addition to demonstrating the differential effects of heterogeneous resource mobilization on OP and IP, different mediation pathways through external resources mobilization are identified in the relationship between SSM and firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore whether and how transformational leadership affects innovativeness in the supply chain context by addressing the following research questions: (1) Whether transformational leadership might help foster conditions for knowledge sharing and lead to supply chain innovativeness (SCI) in China firms? (2) Does supply base rationalization play a moderating role in the above relationship?

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data consisting of 144 valid responses were collected from supply chain innovation and application pilot projects in 55 cities of China. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the reliability and validity of measures, and hierarchical linear regression and bootstrapping were used to test all hypotheses.

Findings

The results obtained reveal that supply chain knowledge sharing partially mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and SCI. Also, supply base rationalization positively moderates the mediated relationship between transformational leadership and SCI.

Practical implications

Managers and decision-makers of supply chain leader firms who want to enhance their entire SCI to deal with unexpected supply chain disruptions are highly recommended to adopt transformational behavior across the supply chain, as well as to develop the knowledge sharing culture, resulting from transformational leadership. In addition, leading firms should be dedicated to structuring their supply base, keeping it at the right size and complexity.

Originality/value

The present study emphasizes previous results and provides additional evidence that supply chain leaders’ adoption of transformational behavior can reinforce entire SCI through knowledge sharing in light of the disruptions facing supply chains in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the accounting system reform on corporate innovation behavior and the heterogeneity and underlying mechanisms of this impact. This paper further aims to study the impact of accounting system reform on corporate value.

Design/methodology/approach

This study takes China's A-share listed corporates as a sample and uses the exogenous policy shock of the implementation of the New Accounting Standards in 2007 to design the identification strategy of propensity score matching and difference-in-differences method. By comparing the differences between the innovation level of corporates in high-tech industries and non-high-tech industries before and after the implementation of the New Accounting Standards, the impact of the accounting system reform on corporates' innovative behavior can be identified.

Findings

Results show that compared with corporates in traditional industries, high-tech corporates obtained higher patent output after the implementation of the New Accounting Standards. This reform mainly affects corporate innovation by improving corporate risk-taking. In addition, this paper finds that the reform of the accounting system has increased the market value of high-tech corporates in the long run.

Originality/value

This study provides new empirical evidence for addressing the insufficient innovation incentives for market entities and enriches the existing literature on the economic effects of the change of accounting systems and the influencing factors of corporate innovative behavior from the accounting system perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a new composite solder to improve the reliability of composite solder joints. Nano-particles modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-MWCNTs) can indeed improve the microstructure of composite solder joints and improve the reliability of solder joints. Although many people have conducted in-depth research on the composite solder of Ni-MWCNTs. However, no one has studied the performance of Ni-MWCNTs composite solder under different aging conditions. In this article, Ni-MWCNTs was added to Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solder, and the physical properties of composite solder, the microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the effect of different aging conditions on the intermetallic compound (IMC) layer growth and shear strength of Ni-modified MWCNTs reinforced SAC composite solder was studied. Compared with SAC307 solder alloy, the influence of Ni-MWCNTs with different contents (0, 0.1 and 0.2 Wt.%) on composite solder was examined. To study the aging characteristics of composite solder joints, the solder joints were aged at 80°C, 120°C and 150°C.

Findings

The experimental results show that the content of Ni-MWCNTs affects the morphology and growth of the IMC layer at the interface. The microhardness of the solder increases and the wetting angle decreases. After aging at moderate (120°C) and high temperature (150°C), the morphology of the Cu6Sn5 IMC layer changed from scallop to lamellar and the grain size became coarser. The following two different phase compositions were observed in the solder joints with Ni-MWCNTs reinforcement: Cu3Sn and (Cu, Ni)6Sn5. The fracture surface of the solder joints all appeared ductile dents, and the size of the pits increased significantly with the increase of the aging temperature. Through growth kinetic analysis, Ni-modified MWCNTs in composite solder joints can effectively inhibit the diffusion of atoms in solder joints. In short, when the addition amount of Ni-MWCNTs is 0.1 Wt.%, the solder joints exhibit the best wettability and the highest shear strength.

Originality/value

In this study, the effects of aging conditions on the growth and shear strength of the IMC layer of Ni modified MWCNTs reinforced SAC307 composite solder were studied. The effects of Ni MWCNTs with different contents (0, 0.1 and 0.2 Wt.%) on the composite solder were examined.

Abstract

Purpose

The transpiration has been recognized as one of the most effective thermal protection methods for future hypersonic vehicles. To improve efficiency and safety, it is urgent to optimize the design of the transpiration system for heat and drag reduction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of transpiration on heat and drag reduction.

Design/methodology/approach

A chemical nonequilibrium flow model with the transpiration is established by using Navier–Stokes equations, the shear-stress transport turbulence model, thermodynamic properties and the Gupta chemical kinetics model. The solver programmed for this model is verified by comparing with experimental results in the literature. Effects of air injection on the flow field, the aerodynamic resistance and the surface heat flux are calculated with the hypersonic flow past a blunt body. Furthermore, a modified blocking coefficient formula is proposed.

Findings

Numerical results show that the transpiration can reduce the aerodynamic resistance and the surface heat flux observably and increase the shock wave standoff distance slightly. It is also manifested that the modified formula is in better agreement with the wind tunnel test results than the original formula.

Originality/value

The modified formula can expand the application range of the engineering method for the blocking coefficient. This study will be beneficial to carry out the optimal design of the transpiration system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new method for evaluating the performance of metasearch engines (MSEs), which was used in the reported study to investigate which of eight popular MSEs (Clusty, Dogpile, Excite, Mamma, MetaCrawler, Search.com, WebCrawler and Webfetch) is the best.

Design/methodology/approach

This research evaluated the performance of eight MSEs. For each MSE the average of closeness degrees between its ranked result list and those of its underlying search engines (SEs) was measured. Next, these measures were compared to each other to determine which MSE gives the best performance. Furthermore the experiment was repeated ten times with ten different queries to reach a stable result.

Findings

The findings revealed that Dogpile outperformed all the others, followed by MetaCrawler, Excite, Webfetch and then Mamma. MetaCrawler and WebCrawler had almost the same performance and occupied the next positions. Clusty and Search.com performed poorly in comparison to the others.

Practical implications

The findings of this research would be useful for MSE designers as well as helping the numerous users of MSEs to choose a truly effective one.

Originality/value

This paper provides a novel method for assessing the performance of MSEs and valuable experimental results on eight popular ones.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to disclose the important role of missing documents, broken links and duplicate items in the results merging process of a metasearch engine in detail. It aims to investigate some related practical challenges and proposes some solutions. The study also aims to employ these solutions to improve an existing model for results aggregation.

Design/methodology/approach

This research measures the amount of an increase in retrieval effectiveness of an existing results merging model that is obtained as a result of the proposed improvements. The 50 queries of the 2002 TREC web track were employed as a standard test collection based on a snapshot of the worldwide web to explore and evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of the suggested method. Three popular web search engines (Ask, Bing and Google) as the underlying resources of metasearch engines were selected. Each of the 50 queries was passed to all three search engines. For each query the top ten non‐sponsored results of each search engine were retrieved. The returned result lists of the search engines were aggregated using a proposed algorithm that takes the practical issues of the process into consideration. The effectiveness of the result lists generated was measured using a well‐known performance indicator called “TSAP” (TREC‐style average precision).

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model increases the performance of an existing results merging system by 14.39 percent on average.

Practical implications

The findings of this research would be helpful for metasearch engine designers as well as providing motivation to the vendors of web search engines to improve their technology.

Originality/value

This study provides some valuable concepts, practical challenges, solutions and experimental results in the field of web metasearching that have not been previously investigated.
