Abstract

Purpose

Interventions to hasten patient discharge continue to proliferate despite evidence that they may be achieving diminishing returns. To better understand what such interventions can be expected to accomplish, the authors aim to critically examine their underlying program theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Within a broader study on patient flow, spanning 10 jurisdictions across Western Canada, the authors conducted in-depth interviews with 300 senior, middle and frontline managers; 174 discussed discharge initiatives. Using thematic analysis informed by a Realistic Evaluation lens, the authors identified the mechanisms by which discharge activities were believed to produce their impacts and the strategies and context factors necessary to trigger the intended mechanisms.

Findings

Managers' accounts suggested a common program theory that applied to a wide variety of discharge initiatives. The chief mechanism was inculcation of a sharp focus on discharge; reinforcing mechanisms included development of shared understanding and a sense of accountability. Participants reported that these mechanisms were difficult to produce and sustain, requiring continual active management and repeated (re)introduction of interventions. This reflected a context in which providers, already overwhelmed with competing demands, were unlikely to be able (or perhaps even willing) to sustain a focus on this particular aspect of care.

Originality/value

The finding that “discharge focus” emerged as the core mechanism of discharge interventions helps to explain why such initiatives may be achieving limited benefit. There is a need for interventions that promote timely discharge without relying on this highly problematic mechanism.

Abstract

This chapter is concerned with examining the families that play Pokémon Go together within the context of spatial practices. The chapter begins by outlining the general approach to spatiality that we adopt throughout this book, which is predicated on the ‘spatial turn’ within the social sciences. Here, spatial practices are understood as being socially constructed in day-to-day live, as opposed to being something simply given. In other words, ‘the concept of the city’ and the ‘urban fact’ (de Certeau, 1984, p. 1, italics in original) are not one and the same thing. Instead, the phenomenology of space is moulded in the social realm as part of the practice of everyday life, which has consequences for hybrid reality games (HRGs) like Pokémon Go. After delineating between ‘space’ and ‘place’ à la the ‘mobilities turn’, we shift our attention to embodied approaches to urban life. This begin with an examination of the art of the flânerie, which has been reimagined to account for the ubiquity of mobile media, and more recently, locative games. A review of the literature surrounding locative games demonstrates that, for the most part, concerns about spatiality have not extended to the kind of intergenerational play that is the focus of this book. Drawing on our original study of Pokémon Go, as outlined above, then, the chapter is driven by the following research questions. First, to what extent does Pokémon Go lead to families spending more time outside and how is this reshaping experienced. Second, what effect does this HRG has on the routes and pathways families choose to follow while traversing their physical setting, as well as the sites they frequent. Third, to what extent do families engage with the various elements of Pokémon Go and what does this suggest about the evolution of locative play in the context of earlier location-based social networks (LBSNs).

Abstract

Purpose

Cultural distance can be a challenge for internationalization. However, in some instances, it is possible that different cultures could represent a benefit for multinational enterprises (MNEs) from emerging contexts. Drawing on the knowledge-based view (KBV), the authors propose that greater cultural distances lead to benefits for multinationals seeking to absorb new knowledge overseas.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors performed ordinary least squares regressions with moderation tests over a database containing 101 cross-border acquisitions to test the study’s hypotheses. The acquisitions were performed by Brazilian firms between 1995 and 2015, targeting 24 host countries.

Findings

The study’s results indicate that cultural distance positively affects the firm's post-acquisition performance and that absorptive capacity moderates these results, improving the positive effect. The study suggests that cultural diversity is an asset for the multinationals in question.

Practical implications

When deciding to invest in a foreign country, managers should consider this cultural diversity as one more value creation driver, especially if the firm has well-developed innovation capabilities.

Originality/value

The study’s findings contribute to the international business literature providing further evidence that emerging markets multinationals can create value in acquisitions through the firm's abilities to exploit cultural asymmetries. Thus, the authors also emphasize that absorptive capacity plays a strategic role in multinational's international strategies.

Abstract

Purpose: In this chapter we examine the emotional experience and identity of sustainability change agents and advance understanding of their emotion management strategies. We explore how sustainability change agents experience, manage, and respond to the negative emotions that arise in the course of their jobs. Study Design: We took a mixed-method and multimodal approach to answer our research questions. Using a narrative approach, we collected data using in-depth narrative interviews and supplemented this with quantitative measurement of participants' heart rate and sweat response during the interviews. Findings: Our results confirm that sustainability change agency is an emotionally laden profession. Furthermore, we found that sustainability change agents use three different coping mechanisms including emotion-focused coping (EFC) (“rational avoiders”), problem-focused coping (PFC) (“committed go-getters”), and meaning-focused coping (MFC) (“green philosophers”). Originality: Our research shows that sustainability change agents experienced strong negative emotions in relation to their jobs and they employed one of the three coping styles: EFC, PFC, or MFC. We found that MFC was an isolated cognitive appraisal style, rather than a form of EFC. These findings provide a starting point for further work to help sustainability change agents avoid potential burnout and continue to contribute to the future health of the planet while at the same time maintain their personal well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a model to examine the relationship between authentic leadership (AL), civility and burnout among health-care employees. This model proposes that civility mediates the relationship between AL and burnout.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 360 (72% response rate) registered health-care employees working in two large public hospital centers in Lisbon, Portugal. The sample was predominantly female (79.4%). The instruments used to measure the variables were the AL inventory, workplace civility scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey. Hayes’ PROCESS macro for mediation analysis in SPSS was used to test the hypothesized model.

Findings

The results suggest that AL has a positive direct effect on civility, adding to the negative effect of the aforementioned variables on burnout. Furthermore, civility was found to have a mediating effect on AL and burnout.

Research limitations/implications

This study may be useful for hospital management and the health-care sector as a whole, underlining the importance of AL and civility in preventing detrimental effects of burnout among health-care employees.

Originality/value

Considering that mainstream literature on AL mainly focuses on nurses, there is a scarcity of literature integrating the relationship between AL, civility and burnout among a wide range of occupational groups in the health-care sector. Furthermore, the research model has not been previously introduced when considering the mediating role of civility in the relationship between AL and burnout.

Este estudio propone un modelo para examinar la relación entre el liderazgo auténtico, la civilidad y el burnout entre los trabajadores de la salud. Este modelo plantea que la civilidad media la relación entre el liderazgo auténtico y el burnout.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Se recopilaron datos de 360 trabajadores de salud registrados (tasa de respuesta del 72%) que trabajan en dos grandes centros hospitalarios públicos en Lisboa, Portugal. La muestra fue predominantemente femenina (79,4%). Los instrumentos utilizados para medir las variables fueron el Inventario de Liderazgo Auténtico, la Escala de Civilidad de Trabajo y el Inventario de Burnout de Maslach. Se utilizó el macroproceso de Hayes para el análisis de mediación en SPSS para probar el modelo hipotetizado.

Conclusiones

Los resultados sugieren que el liderazgo auténtico tiene un efecto directo positivo en la civilidad, sumándose al efecto negativo de las variables mencionadas anteriormente en el burnout. Además, se encontró que la civilidad tiene un efecto mediador en el liderazgo auténtico y el burnout.

Implicaciones

Este estudio puede ser útil para la gestión hospitalaria y el sector de la salud en su conjunto, destacando la importancia del liderazgo auténtico y la civilidad para prevenir los efectos perjudiciales del burnout entre los trabajadores de la salud.

Originalidad/valor

Dado que la literatura predominante sobre el liderazgo auténtico se centra principalmente en las enfermeras, existe una escasez de literatura que integre la relación entre el liderazgo auténtico, civilidad y el burnout en una amplia gama de grupos ocupacionales en el sector de la salud. Además, el modelo de investigación no se ha presentado previamente al considerar el papel mediador de la civilidad en la relación entre el liderazgo auténtico y el burnout.

Os dados foram recolhidos de 360 (com taxa de resposta de 72%) funcionários registados do sistema de saúde em dois centros hospitalares de Lisboa, Portugal. A amostra foi predominantemente feminina (79,4%). Os instrumentos usados para medir as variáveis foram Authentic Leadership Inventory, Escala de Civilidade no Trabalho e Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey. O modelo proposto foi testado fazendo uso da macro Hayes PROCESS para análise de mediação no SPSS.

Conclusões

Os resultados sugerem que a liderança autêntica tem um efeito positivo direto na civilidade, além do efeito negativo no burnout. Adicionalmente, verificou-se um efeito mediador da variável civilidade nas variáveis liderança autêntica e burnout.

Implicações

Este estudo pode ser útil a administradores hospitalares e gestores no sector da saúde em geral, sublinhando a importância da liderança autêntica e civilidade na prevenção dos efeitos prejudiciais do burnout em profissionais de saúde.

Originalidade/valor

Considerando que a literatura prevalente sobre liderança autêntica foca maioritariamente enfermeiros, existe uma escassez de estudos que integram liderança autêntica, civilidade e burnout num amplo espetro de grupos profissionais no setor da saúde. Adicionalmente, o modelo de investigação considerando o papel mediador da civilidade na relação entre liderança autêntica e burnout não foi introduzido.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to explore undergraduate placement experiences in tourism and hospitality SMEs, focusing on the notions of surprise and sense making. It aims to argue that surprises and sense making are important elements not only of the adjustment process when entering new work environments, but also of the learning experience that placements provide.

Design/methodology/approach

In‐depth interviews were conducted with 20 students who had recently completed a 48 week placement.

Findings

The paper finds that the surprises students encountered were not as dramatic as the literature on organisational entry suggests. This is partially explained by students already having gained substantial amounts of work experience prior to the placement. A number of SME‐characteristic employment experiences were confirmed while others were questioned.

Research limitations/implications

Further detailed research is required that takes a more holistic account of the placement experience in order to understand more fully the impact of placement on learning and career choices.

Practical implications

The paper raises important questions about the value of undergraduate placements in an age of mass higher education where many students work part‐time.

Originality/value

An apparent lack of reflection hindered the sense making process, which raises questions as to whether placements are achieving their potential for experiential learning.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the development of the empirical literature on international outsourcing of information technology services (ITS) over the 1992‐2007 period and to identify future research areas.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 78 empirical academic publications on international outsourcing of ITS conducted between 1992 and 2007 across 46 scholarly journals constitutes the main data for analytical purposes. The sample is compiled following extensive electronic searches of the main academic databases. After clustering the studies in the sample according to their main research areas, a narrative approach is used to review developments in each cluster and to identify emerging research areas.

Findings

Four main areas of research are identified, namely outsourcing decision, outsourcing management (OSM), outsourcing outcome and the role of offshore service providers (OSPs). The review suggests that research efforts to date have been predominantly on outsourcing decision and OSM, mostly from the perspective of clients. Future research opportunities exist in the areas of outsourcing strategy and performance, the behaviour and performance of OSPs particularly within the context of firms from less‐developed countries competing globally, and the nature of competition among OSPs both within and among countries.

Originality/value

This is the first review which focuses on empirical studies of outsourcing for ITS. This paper identifies several gaps in the literature and points to the need for more research on outsourcing from the perspective of OSPs.

Abstract

During the 2020 election cycle, 2,276 super PACs spent over $2.1 billion in federal elections. This chapter argues that changes made to the US campaign finance system brought about by the Citizens United v. FEC (2010) and SpeechNow.org v. FEC (2010) cases have destabilized the American political system by fueling tensions between right-wing and left-wing populist factions and by contributing to congressional corruption. By moving away from the political corruption standard and toward the free speech standard in Citizens United, polarizing wealthy mega-donors and dark money sources have come to play a dominant role in congressional elections. These cases also helped to contribute to a two-tiered campaign finance regulatory structure that distinguishes between campaign contributions given directly to federal candidates and political money contributed to super PACs to support or oppose federal candidates. In the 2020 congressional elections, PACs and super PACS outspent both major party candidates combined in 35 House and Senate races. Super PACs are serving as “shadow parties” by targeting competitive races for the purpose of swaying partisan control of Congress. This study also shows that an exceedingly high percentage of super PAC money is spent on negative advertising that further divides rather than unifies the nation. This chapter also highlights the corrupting influence of congressional leadership PACs and examines how super PACs have enabled foreign and dark money sources to illegally influence congressional campaigns.
