Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to research the effect of the different structures of dimpled textures on the rod bearing surfaces on improving the engine’s lubrication efficiency and friction power loss (LE-FPL).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the hydrodynamic model of the rod bearing, the effect of different structures of dimpled surfaces including circular dimples (CD), square dimples (SD), wedge-shaped dimples (WSD), circular-square dimples (CSD) and square-wedge-shaped dimples (SWSD) on ameliorating the LE-FPL is analyzed under the different operating conditions of the engine. The oil film pressure (p), asperity contact force (Wac), friction force (Ff) and coefficient of friction (COF) of the rod bearing are chosen to evaluate the LE-FPL.

Findings

The SD’s performance on improving the LE-FPL is better than all other structures of the CD, WSD, CSD and SWSD. Particularly, the average values of Wac, Ff and COF with the SD is significantly reduced by 14.5%, 28.5% and 33.3% compared to the optimal dimensions of the rod bearing; and by 26.4%, 34.5% and 43.7% compared to the optimal CD (n = m = 6).

Originality/value

The generated friction between surfaces of rod bearings of the engine not only reduces the engine power but also affects the durability of the structures. Thus, the optimal design of the SD to further improve the LE-FPL is very necessary.

Abstract

The National Pension Service (NPS) of Korea suddenly announced that they would suspend their stock lending business from October 22, 2018. Using this ideal setting, the authors investigate the effects of this suspension on market quality and short-selling activities. The authors find that stock return does not increase after the suspension of stock lending for both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets. However, the returns of stocks with NPS ownership decline less than those without NPS ownership. The authors also find that the institutional and foreign investors' short sales did not increase in both markets after the lending business suspension by the NPS. In addition, the effect of suspension of stock lending on market quality is mixed, so the authors cannot conclude that market quality has improved. Overall, the authors’ results indicate that the stock market, especially for short-sales activity, has not been affected by the suspension of the stock lending service by the NPS.

Abstract

Purpose

It is only logical that a firm aims to make a profit after entering the market. However, some firms enter the market with the goal of market expansion and even burn money to pursue market share, which is counterintuitive in practice. To explore the theoretical foundations behind this rare phenomenon, this paper focuses on discussing the impact of the market expansion entry strategy on the entrant firm and the incumbent firm.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a game theory model of a supply chain with an incumbent and an entrant, this paper explores the mathematical conditions for the entrant to adopt either the traditional or the market expansion entry strategy and investigates the incumbent’s benefits and losses under different entry strategies.

Findings

The results show that when the market-expansion effect and the selling price ceiling are moderate, the entrant firm always adopts the market expansion entry strategy, and the incumbent firm obtains a free ride from the entrant firm and benefits from it. The entire industry profits and the industry consumer surplus are increased. In particular, we further investigate the cases in which the incumbent firm has a first-mover advantage or there is a troublesome cost, and the results confirm the aforementioned conclusions.

Originality/value

By considering market share as the entrant’s goal, this paper contributes to the dual-purpose literature. Moreover, based on the model’s mathematical results, this paper offers relevant management insights for the entrant and its stakeholders in the e-commerce platform.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate short selling and stock price crash risk. The authors find that short selling is positively associated with one-month-ahead stock price crash risk, consistent with the literature showing that short sellers are informed traders. The authors attribute this prediction ability to the information short sellers receive from foreign investors with high levels of ownership in a firm. The results shed light on policy issues regarding short selling regulation.

Abstract

Since the emergence of the Internet in the twentieth century and the rapid growth of different types of information technologies (IT), our lives, either personal or professional, have become digitised. Adoption and diffusion of IT enhance individuals and organisational performance, yet scholars discovered a dual nature of IT in which IT usage may have negative aspects too. First, the inability to cope with IT in a healthy manner creates stress in users, termed technostress. Second, digitisation and adoption of new technologies (e.g. IoT and multi-cloud environments) have increased vulnerabilities to information security (InfoSec) threats. Although organisations utilise counteraction strategies (e.g., security systems, security policies), end-users remain the top source of security incidents. Existing behavioural research has approached technostress and InfoSec independently. However, it is not clear how technology-stressors influence employees’ security-related behaviours. This chapter reviews the interaction effect of these concepts in detail by proposing a conceptual model that explains that technostress is the main reason for employees’ non-compliance with security policies in which users with high-level perceptions of technostress are more likely to violate InfoSec policies. Counteraction strategies to mitigate technostress and security threats are also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid growth of m-commerce and mobile marketing has flooded the users with homogeneous contents that raise little user interest making the users' browsing pattern on these contents aimless free browsing. However, the interface that presents the mobile marketing contents triggers much user attention, especially the layout. Without significant usability defects, the layout poses influences on the user's aesthetic experience. Identifying the layout attributes that affect user aesthetic preference is critical to the design of mobile marketing interfaces since they influence users' interaction intention, cognitive process, and decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, 6 layout attributes that quantify the aesthetic design of the interface layout and 3 eye-movement indicators that connect to human aesthetic preference were identified through literature research. An eye-tracking experiment measuring the 3 eye-movement indicators on 6 pairs of interface layout materials corresponding to the 6 layout attributes was conducted. The experiment was designed to mimic the free browsing context in mobile marketing. The materials were divided into Liked/Disliked preference groups according to the response of the subjects. Analysis of indicators on materials between the L/D groups shows that the attributes of balance, centricity, density, simplicity, and symmetry affect user aesthetic preferences.

Findings

Analysis of the attribute value levels shows that balance, centricity, and density are responsible for addressing users' aesthetic preferences for a disliked interface layout. The study suggests an attribute set for quantitatively optimizing the aesthetic design of mobile marketing system interfaces and provides evidence for the visual attention and cognitive process under the free browsing context.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the field both theoretically and practically: (1) it provides support for optimizing the interface layout of mobile marketing systems quantitatively from the aesthetic perspective. (2) It promotes the cognitive attention theory by providing evidence for the cognitive process of interacting with mobile marketing interfaces from the perspective of visual attention and cognitive fluency. (3) It expands the objects of visual perception from traditional or symbolic artworks (such as logos) to the abstract visual stimuli of interface layout. (4) It suggests an optimization tool of five quantification layout attributes for mobile marketing businesses and platforms to aesthetically improve their marketing interfaces to improve user experiences.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to suggest a moderated mediation model addressing how internal integration interacts with information technology (IT) link with external customers to meet customer needs more efficiently and effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

This study tests the proposed hypotheses by using 268 data collected from manufacturing firms worldwide.

Findings

The results of this study reveal that internal integration plays a very important role in promoting customer satisfaction directly and indirectly by enhancing the ability to meet customers’ flexibility needs. In addition, the results show that IT link with customers strengthens this indirect influencing relationship.

Originality/value

By combining IT connectedness with external customers with internal capability, this study provides valuable insights into how manufacturing firms apply internal integration more effectively to enhance customer satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to explore the relationship between manufacturing–research and development (R&D) integration and organizational culture in enhancing quality and product development performance (PDP).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data collected from 931 manufacturing firms around world, the authors examine the proposed hypothesis by using regression analyses. In addition, PROCESS (SPSS macro) is used to test both the mediation and moderated mediation models in this study.

Findings

The findings reveal that quality management practices (QMPs) partially mediate the relationship between R&D-manufacturing integration and PDP. Further, it is found that the direct and indirect effects of R&D-manufacturing integration on PDP are stronger when the organization is characterized as participative rather than hierarchical.

Originality/value

This study, by investigating the combined effect of R&D-manufacturing integration and organizational culture on QMPs and PDP, provides practical insights into the ways that manufacturing firms effectively utilize the integration between R&D and manufacturing functions to improve QMPs and enhance PDP.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of government support on the coupling coordination degree of innovation chain and capital chain in integrated circuit (IC) enterprises and to explore the mechanism for considering talent in the influence path.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses coupling coordination degree model to estimate the coupling of two chains, and applies dynamic panel system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) to analyze the impact of government support on coupling of two chains and conducts dynamic panel threshold regression to explore the threshold effect of talent in the influence of government support on coupling coordination degree.

Findings

Serious imbalance in the coupling of two chains is a major obstacle in IC enterprises. Government support significantly reduces the coupling coordination degree. The talent in IC enterprises has a significant threshold effect. When the number of talent is lower than the threshold value, government support has a negative impact. Once the number of talent reaches a certain level, government support can significantly enhance the coupling of two chains. Compared with state-owned enterprises, government support has a greater negative impact on the coupling of the two chains in non-state-owned enterprises. The former needs more talent to take advantage of government support.

Originality/value

This paper applies the concept of coupling into enterprises and deeply studies the coupling coordination degree of two chains. The influence mechanism of government support and talent on the coupling of two chains is explored, which reveals that government support cannot achieve the expected incentive effect without the support of talent. We also discuss the heterogeneous effect of government support and of talent in enterprises of different ownership types.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the correlation between wear behavior and microstructure evolution in friction-induced deformation layers (FDL) of 30CrMnSi steel, especially the role of strain-hardening induced by plastic deformation in FDL, which accordingly alters the wear behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Dry sliding friction and wear behaviors of the 30CrMnSi steel against quenched and tempered GCr15 steel were studied using a pin-on-disc tester. The microstructure, hardness and plastic deformation of FDL were investigated.

Findings

It was found that the evolution of microstructure and strain-hardening induced by plastic deformation were occurred in the subsurface. When the microstructure, hardness and depth of the plastic deformation layer (PDL) reached a relatively steady state, the friction process transformed into stable-state stage. The wear loss and depth of the PDL was in dynamic equilibrium at stable wear stage.

Originality/value

In this paper, the correlation among the microstructure evolution, the strain-hardening and wear behavior were systemically analyzed. This paper could provide a theoretical reference for optimizing the microstructure and strain hardening properties of tribo-pairs materials.
