Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to build a customer engagement strategy for an emerging market using the Internet of Things (IoT) origin real-time data analytics for a classical retail business to customer domain.

Design/methodology/approach

The study presented is twofold. First, it empirically tests a theoretical model where the impact of different parameters influencing customer engagement are validated, and its influence on the resultant parameters, i.e. brand loyalty and brand ambassador, is analyzed. Second, it emphasizes on the use of real-time IoT origin data in customer analytics to determine a customer engagement strategy.

Findings

Results indicate that the four parameters, i.e., value propositions basis the buying patterns, loyalty programs, personalized communication and involving the customer in the new development process are influencing customer engagement positively, whereas the parameter loyalty program scores the maximum regression weight. IoT plays a crucial role in generating the real-time data used for generating customer analytics that proves to be vital for the longevity of the organization.

Practical implications

The organizations need judicious blend of four parameters such as value proposition based on buying patterns, participation in new product development, personalized communication and loyalty program while designing the customer engagement strategy. Results drawn from the focused group interview highlight the power of IoT origin real-time data in the customer analytics further strengthening the need of customer centricity in an organization.

Originality/value

Identified need of building a customer engagement strategy for an emerging market with the help of IoT data is addressed in this paper that is identified as an unexplored area and a research gap.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of real-time data emerging from implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and netnography on the efficiency of the new product development (NPD).

Design/methodology/approach

Customer-oriented organizations are the ones that survive in the market with a flow of new products to the market. Expectations like reduced timelines with quality focus provoke innovations. Customer inputs become the soul for a successful product wherein it becomes important to keep a constant stream of information flow back from the market. Literature review states that real-time data gathering with the implementation of IoT ensures the same. Along with real-time data, researchers have envisaged the need to identify the customer persona before incorporating customer opinion and sentiments vide netnography.

Findings

The organization can leverage the collaboration of IoT origin real-time data and sentiment analysis to effectively manage the NPD. Real-time customer data coupled with customer opinions and sentiments prove to be a game changer in the NPD process.

Originality/value

The originalities of this study are impact of IoT origin real-time data coupled with sentiment analysis on the NPD process. While impact of IoT origin data is reported in isolation similar to sentiment analysis, influence of collaboration of real-time data with sentiment analysis on NPD process is reported in this study.

Abstract

A paradigm shift is observed in the last decade where transactional marketing is taken over by relationship marketing. Customer relationship management (CRM) has been an integral part of a business strategy in the current era. CRM integrates product sales, product marketing and, most importantly, customer service in a seamless manner to generate value for the organization as well as for its customers in short a win-win situation. Profoundly, CRM needs to be a part of the top management agenda and driven top-down instead of an IT initiative. Industrial revolution 4.0 is characterized by cyber-physical systems. Internet of Things (IoT) is the digital technology for the present and future. IoT primarily aids in gathering real-time data and transmitting the same over the internet to a central repository for consuming the same in business models. Real-time customer data analytics can be performed by customer-centric organizations to enhance CRM.

Abstract

A paradigm shift was observed a couple of decades back when the relationship marketing took over the transactional marketing. Concepts such as customer lifetime value came into existence. Customer lifetime value is nothing but the aggregate income which an organisation can expect from a customer as long as the customer remains a client. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) took the centre stage as the organisations are transformed into customer-centric organisations. The implementation of CRM earmarked the collection of customer data that enabled the personalisation of products. Business use cases emerged with differential pricing models and loyalty programs contributing to the profitability of the organisations. The different types of CRM, i.e. Strategic CRM, Operational CRM, Analytical CRM and Collaborative CRM, contributed further to the organisation to generate value for the customers as well as for the organisation. Innovations in the digital technologies supported the business use cases with the help of real-time data. The usage of real-time analytics delivered unmatched customer experience resulting in a higher degree of customer satisfaction and customer retention. Customer retention as we know is directly related to the longevity of an organisation, while customer acquisition is expensive. Researchers in this chapter have attempted to unleash the importance of CRM simultaneously presenting the impact of digital technologies on CRM. Readers could be greatly benefitted from this research as practical use cases are discussed, while academicians can cascade this information further.

Contemporary organisations are data-driven with sophisticated and strong Information Technology (IT) supporting the Business Intelligence (BI) systems. Due to the Industrial Revolution 4.0, businesses are subjected to volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). The accuracy and agility of decision making (DM) play a key role in the success of contemporary organisations. Traditional methods of DM, i.e. based on tacit knowledge, are no longer relevant in the constantly altering business scenarios. Innovations in the IT domain have accomplished systems to gather and process business data at an exponential speed. Context-driven analytics along with computation capability and performance-driven visualisation have become an implicit need for businesses. BI systems offer the capabilities of data-driven DM simultaneously allowing organisations to predict the future business scenarios. Qualitative research is conducted in this chapter. In the research, interviews, questionnaires, and secondary data from previous research are used as data source. Case studies are discussed to clarify the business use cases of BI systems and their impact on managerial DM. Theoretical foundations are stated basis a thorough literature review of the available body of knowledge. The current environment demands data-driven DM in an organisation at all levels, i.e. strategic, tactical, and operational. Heterogeneous data sources add unlimited value to the decision support systems (DSSs). The BI systems have become an integral part of the technology landscape and an essential element in managerial DM. Contemporary businesses have deployed BI systems in all the functions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a systematic review about the Internet of Things (IoT) and its impacts on happiness. It intends to serve as a platform for further research as it is sparse in in-depth analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

This systematic review initially observed 2,501 literary articles through the ScienceDirect and WorldCat search engines before narrowing it down to 72 articles based on subject matter relevance in the abstract and keywords. Accounting for duplicates between search engines, the count was reduced to 66 articles. To finally narrow down all the literature used in this systematic review, 66 articles were given a critical readthrough. The count was finally reduced to 53 total articles used in this systematic review.

Findings

This paper necessitates the claim that IoT will likely impact many aspects of our everyday lives. Through the literature observed, it was found that IoT will have some significant and positive impacts on people's welfare and lives. The unprecedented nature of IoTs impacts on society should warrant further research moving forward.

Research limitations/implications

While the literature presented in this systematic review shows that IoT can positively impact the perceived or explicit happiness of people, the amount of literature found to supplement this argument is still on the lower end. They also necessitate the need for both greater depth and variety in this field of research.

Practical implications

Since technology is already a pervasive element of most people’s contemporary lives, it stands to reason that the most important factors to consider will be in how we might benefit from IoT or, more notably, how IoT can enhance our levels of happiness. A significant implication is its ability to reduce the gap in happiness levels between urban and rural areas.

Originality/value

Currently, the literature directly tackling the quantification of IoTs perceived influence on happiness has yet to be truly discussed broadly. This systematic review serves as a starting point for further discussion in the subject matter. In addition, this paper may lead to a better understanding of the IoT technology and how we can best advance and adapt it to the benefits of the society.
