Abstract

Purpose

Innovative work behaviour (IWB) has long been advocated as a crucial resource for organisations. Evidence that work characteristics stimulate the adoption of IWB is widespread. Yet, the relationship between knowledge characteristics and IWB has often been overlooked. This study aims to address this gap by examining this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Building on an integrative vision of innovation, this study analyses the effects of combinations in work characteristics on IWB through a configurational approach. Job autonomy, complexity, problem solving, specialisation and demand for constant learning were examined as determinants of IWB using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

Findings

Based on a sample of 214 Belgium employees, the results highlight seven configurations of work characteristics to elicit high levels of IWB. For six of them, problem solving appears as a needed condition.

Practical implications

Presented findings offer insights for organisations aiming at evolving in a competitive context to generate optimal conditions for promoting employee innovation.

Originality/value

While most studies have tested the influence of work characteristics independently, this research investigates the joint influence of work characteristics and identifies how combinations of multiple variables lead to IWB.

Abstract

This study sets out to examine the relationships between job characteristics, Perceived Organisational support (POS) and Organizational citizenship behaviours (OCB). The mediating role of intrinsic motivation was additionally examined. Although the effects of Perceived Organisational support on Organisational citizenship behaviours are well-documented, few studies have examined the role of job characteristics and intrinsic motivation on organisational citizenship behaviours. Yet, there appear to be natural links between job characteristics, intrinsic motivation and OCB. The sample of the study included a total of 422 nurses. Subjects were recruited from different hospitals located throughout Belgium. Data for this study was obtained by means of questionnaires. Both measures are based on scales that appear to be reliable. Results provide insight into how perceived organizational support and job characteristics impact organizational citizenship behaviour. Intrinsic motivation mediated the relation between job characteristics and organizational citizenship behaviour.

Prior studies have shown that commitment to the organization is related to organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB). The target of organizational commitment is the organization itself. So the organizational citizenship behaviour most likely to be influenced by this commitment is OCB-oriented organization (Masterson, Lewis, Goldman & Taylor, 2000; Cohen, 1999). Given that workers are the targets of supervisor commitment and work group commitment, the behaviour most likely to be affected by this commitment is supervisor and worker-oriented behaviour. The results provide support for the idea that organizational commitment is associated with OCB-oriented organization.

Abstract

Whereas most societal commentators continue to review the historical patterns of men’s leadership in search of models for 21st-century success, few have begun to recognize, let alone appreciate, the equivalent patterns of women’s leadership and the future contributions that women could potentially make as leaders. What could and are women bringing to society as global leaders? Why at this moment in history is there such a marked increase in the number of women leaders? Are we entering an era in which both male and female leaders will shape history, both symbolically and in reality? And if so, will we discover that women, on average, lead in different ways than men, or will we learn that role (global leader) explains more than gender? This chapter reveals the accelerating trends of women joining men in senior leadership positions, establishes the relationship of women leaders to our overall understanding of global leadership, and sets forth an agenda to accomplish much needed research and understanding.

Abstract

Purpose

Currently, the hype surrounding digitalization proclaims that the way in which companies create and capture value will change dramatically. Companies that adjust their business models to embrace digital technologies will need different skill sets and competences. Current research tends to focus on the impact of digital technologies on corporations or more generally the labor market, but the authors lack detailed insights into how companies perceive this development to influence their needs regarding employee qualifications. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore how companies perceive the impact of digital technologies on the education and training needs of current and future employees.

Design/methodology/approach

This study draws on eight case studies from the food industry. It focuses on one occupation certified within the German “dual system” of vocational education and training (VET), the machine and plant operator with focus on food technology.

Findings

The findings suggest that the impact of different digital technologies on employees’ job positions, working tasks and training needs is carefully considered in decisions regarding the implementation of digital technologies. Despite some company-specific contingencies, the perceived implications for VET needs are largely similar across the sample.

Originality/value

This study draws attention to the importance of reviewing VET needs in relation to the decision of implementing digital technologies.
