Abstract

Purpose

This research explores the differential effects of pixel-level and object-level visual complexity in firm-generated content (FGC) on consumer engagement in terms of the number of likes and shares, and further investigates the moderating role of image brightness.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on a deep learning analysis of 85,975 images on a social media platform in China, this study investigates visual complexity in FGC.

Findings

The results indicate that pixel-level complexity increases both the number of likes and shares. Object-level complexity has a U-shaped relationship with the number of likes, while it has an inverted U-shaped relationship with the number of shares. Moreover, image brightness mitigates the effect of pixel-level complexity on likes but amplifies the effect on shares; contrarily, it amplifies the effect of object-level complexity on likes, while mitigating its effect on shares.

Originality/value

Although images play a critical role in FGC, visual data analytics has rarely been used in social media research. This study identified two types of visual complexity and investigated their differential effects. We discuss how the processing of information embedded in visual content influences consumer engagement. The findings enrich the literature on social media and visual marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the study was to investigate the differential effects of interpersonal relationships across functions on product and service innovation, and to examine the moderating role of market competition.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was based on a survey of senior and middle managers from 149 pharmaceutical firms in China.

Findings

Interpersonal relationships between employees across functions (IR-E) have a stronger impact on product innovation than do interpersonal relationships between managers across functions (IR-M), but IR-M have a stronger impact on service innovation. Market competition strengthens the effects of IR-M on both product and service innovation, but it attenuates the effect of IR-E on service innovation.

Originality/value

Although the effects of interpersonal relationships across functions are crucial to cross-functional interactions, these effects have received little attention in the literature. By identifying the potential “backfiring” effect of dual-level interpersonal relationships, this study contributes to knowledge of cross-functional relationships. It also deepens understanding of the relationship between cross-functional relationships and organizational innovation, especially in the service setting.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to obtain equations that can be used to describe the motion of any given point in the swing jaw of a single toggle jaw crusher.

Design/methodology/approach

The swing jaw drive mechanism of a single toggle jaw crusher is modelled as a planar crank and rocker mechanism with the swing jaw as the coupler link. Starting with the vector loop closure equation for the mechanism, equations of the position, velocity and acceleration of any given point in the swing jaw are obtained.

Findings

Application of the kinematical equations that were obtained is demonstrated using the dimensional data of a practical single toggle jaw crusher. Thus, a description of the kinematics of any given point in the swing jaw of a single toggle jaw crusher is realized.

Originality/value

The model of the single toggle jaw crusher mechanism as a planar crank and rocker mechanism is a realistic one. The equations obtained in this paper should be useful in further studies on the mechanics and design of the single toggle jaw crusher.

Abstract

Purpose

Shell structures are highly efficient and are an elegant way of covering large uninterrupted spaces, but their complex geometry is notoriously difficult to model and analyse. This paper aims to describe a novel free-form shell modelling technique based on structural harmonics.

Design/methodology/approach

The method builds on work using weighted eigenmodes for three-dimensional mesh modelling in a computer graphics setting and extends it by specifically adapting the technique to an architectural design context. This not only enables the sculpting of free-form architectural surfaces using only a few control parameters but also takes advantage of the synergies between eigenmodes and structural buckling modes, to provide an efficient means of stiffening a shell against failure by buckling.

Findings

The result is a flexible free-form modelling tool that not only enables the creation of arbitrary doubly curved surfaces but also allows simultan. The tool helps to assist in the design of shells at the conceptual stage and encourages an interaction between the architect and engineer. A number of initiatives, including a single degree of freedom design, boundary constraints, visualisation aids and guidelines towards specific spatial configurations have been introduced to satisfactorily adapt the method to an architectural context.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a boundary element analysis of two-dimensional linear elasticity problems by a new expanding element interpolation method.

Design/methodology/approach

The expanding element is made up based on a traditional discontinuous element by adding virtual nodes along the perimeter of the element. The internal nodes of the original discontinuous element are referred to as source nodes and its shape function as raw shape function. The shape functions of the expanding element constructed on both source nodes and virtual nodes are referred as fine shape functions. Boundary variables are interpolated by the fine shape functions, while the boundary integral equations are collocated on source nodes.

Findings

The expanding element inherits the advantages of both the continuous and discontinuous elements while overcomes their disadvantages. The polynomial order of fine shape functions of the expanding elements increases by two compared with their corresponding raw shape functions, while the expanding elements still keep independence to each other as the original discontinuous elements. This feature makes the expanding elements able to naturally and accurately interpolate both continuous and discontinuous fields.

Originality/value

Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed method. Results have demonstrated that the accuracy, efficiency and convergence rate of the expanding element method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the influences of social trust and neighborhood cohesion on public trust in the police in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used survey data collected from roughly 5,600 respondents by the 2012 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS). Multivariate regression was employed to analyze the effects of two forms of social trust, generalized trust and particularized trust, and three types of neighborhood cohesion, neighbor solidary, support and interaction, on public trust in the Chinese police, controlling for personal background characteristics.

Findings

Both generalized trust and particularized trust exerted a significant positive effect on trust in the Chinese police. Greater neighborhood cohesion also enhanced public trust in the police. Elderly, women, less educated and people with rural hukou and higher perceived social class were more likely to trust the police.

Research limitations/implications

The CGSS data contained only a single item that could be used to measure public trust in the police. Future studies should consider using multiple survey items to reflect Chinese people’s trust from different conceptual dimensions, such as procedural- and outcome-based trust and police legitimacy. The CGSS data also did not contain information on some relevant predictors, such as victimization and fear of crime, personal and vicarious contact experiences with the police, and news and social media usage and exposure. Future studies, if possible, should incorporate these theoretically relevant and empirically proven variables into the analysis.

Practical implications

Improving neighborhood cohesion is a clear path to cultivate stronger public trust in the police. Policy-makers and officials must bring the neighborhood-centered approach back to local governance by working closely with police leaders and other private and parochial social institutions to launch programs that can effectively stabilize and strengthen local communities and actively promoting positive interactions and social bonds among residents. Policies and programs aimed at enhancing public trust in the police should target at younger, better educated and urban Chinese who are more likely to be critical of the police.

Originality/value

Despite their high relevance, social trust and neighborhood cohesion have received only limited attention in past research on Chinese attitudes toward the police. This study represents one of the first attempts to examine different forms of social trust and neighborhood cohesion on public trust in the police in China.

Purpose

Enterprise social media can be the organizational transactive memory in which the knowledge dialogue provides users with the metaknowledge to support knowledge transfer. The purpose of this study is to examine a mediation model to show how perceived critical mass, openness and affiliation climate affect organizational knowledge transfer through the mediation of improving the metaknowledge of who knows what and whom.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the mediation model and corresponding hypotheses, this study employs structural equation modeling analysis using 264 valid questionnaires.

Findings

The study found the two mediators fully explained the effects of the three preconditions on knowledge transfer.

Originality/value

These results help us to better understand the benefits of enterprise social media and the functions of transactive memory in organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The proposed method is to generate the 3 D model of frame assemblies based on their topological model automatedly. It was a very demanding task and there was no appropriate automated method to facilitate this work.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method includes two stages. The first stage is decisive. In this stage, a deep learning network and the Chu–Liu–Edmonds algorithm are used to recognize contact relations among parts. Based on this recognition, the authors perform a geometrical computation in the second stage to finalize the 3 D model.

Findings

The authors verify the feasibility of the proposed method using a case study and find that the classification rate of the deep learning network for part contact relations is higher than 75 per cent. Furthermore, more accurate results could be achieved with modification by the Chu–Liu–Edmonds algorithm. The proposed method has lower computational complexity compared with traditional heuristic methods, and its results are more consistent with existing designs.

Research limitations/implications

The paper introduces machine learning method into assembly modelling issue. The proposed method divides the assembly modelling into two steps and solves the assemble relation creatively.

Practical implications

Frame assemblies are fundamental to many areas. The proposed method could automate frame assembly modelling in a viable way. It could benefit design and manufacture process significantly.

Originality/value

The proposed method expands the application of machine learning into a new field. It would be more useful than simple machine learning in industry. The proposed method is better than general heuristic algorithms. It outputs identical results when the inputs are the same. Meanwhile, the algorithmic complexity in worst situation is better than general heuristic algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to show a resin-flowing model based on Darcy’s law to display the flowing properties of prepreg during lamination. The conformity between the model and experimental results demonstrates that it can provide a guideline on print circuit board (PCB) lamination.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the theoretical derivations of Darcy’s law, this paper made an analysis on the flow of prepreg in the pressing process, according to which a theoretical model, namely, resin-flowing model was further formulated.

Findings

This paper establishes a resin-flowing model, according to which two experiment-verified conclusions can be drawn: first, the resin-flowing properties of material A and B can be improved when the heating rate is between 1.5 and 2.5 min/°C; second, increased pressure gradient can add the amount of flowing resin, mainly featured by increasing pressure and reducing filled thickness of prepreg.

Originality/value

This model provides guidance on setting lamination parameters for most kinds of prepregs and decreasing starvation risk for PCB production.
