Abstract

Purpose

Developing technological innovations in healthcare is made complex and difficult due to effects upon the practices of professional, managerial and other stakeholders. Drawing upon the concept of boundary object, this paper explores the challenges of achieving effective collaboration in the development and use of a novel healthcare innovation in the English healthcare system.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study is presented of the development and implementation of a smart phone application (app) for use by rheumatoid arthritis patients. Over a two-year period (2015–2017), qualitative data from recorded clinical consultations (n = 17), semi-structured interviews (n = 63) and two focus groups (n = 13) were obtained from participants involved in the app's development and use (clinicians, patients, researchers, practitioners, IT specialists and managers).

Findings

The case focuses on the use of the app and its outputs as a system of inter-connected boundary objects. The analysis highlights the challenges overcome in the innovation's development and how knowledge sharing between patients and clinicians was enhanced, altering the nature of the clinical consultation. It also shows how conditions surrounding the innovation both enabled its development and inhibited its wider scale-up.

Originality/value

By recognizing that technological artefacts can simultaneously enable and inhibit collaboration, this paper highlights the need to overcome tensions between the transformative capability of such healthcare innovations and the inhibiting effects simultaneously created on change at a wider system level.

Abstract

Purpose

Working towards a broader understanding of information provision by agencies responding to crisis situations, the aim of this paper is to examine mandated information provision on the part of law enforcement to survivors of intimate partner violence at the scene of an emergency response.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a detailed content analysis of 1,851 documents supplied by local law enforcement agencies from 755 US cities. A 29‐element coding framework was developed to identify five key content areas of information: the nature of abuse, survivor norms, police information, legal options, and community resources.

Findings

The best represented content areas related to police information, legal options, and community resources. Information on the nature of abuse and survivor hood was dramatically less well represented. Law enforcement understandably privileges that information which involves immediate, concrete action and within which the officer may have a responsibility (for example, to obtain a temporary restraining order). Correlations between city size and the presence of information elements were minimal, while several significant correlations based on region were noted.

Originality/value

This is the first nationwide study of the information that police are required to provide to survivors of intimate partner violence. Understanding the features of this seldom‐discussed yet vital interaction can help IS professionals support practices and protocols of other agencies responding to crisis situations who may be struggling with minimal preparation for information interactions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology to analyze the total sintering energy (TSE) required for manufacturing a part in metal powder-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes and optimize AM processes for minimizing total energy and form errors of AM parts while maximizing part strength.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a computational geometry approach to determine the TSE expended for manufacturing a metal AM part. The stereolithography (STL) file of a part is converted into a voxel data structure and the total sintering volume (TSV) is computed from the voxel representation. The TSE is then calculated from the TSV using the material property information of the metal powder.

Findings

The TSE of an AM part is calculated for different slice thickness and part orientations, and the correlation of the total energy to these parameters is calculated. Using these correlations, the AM process is optimized to calculate the optimal values of slice thickness and part orientation which would result in lower process energy, lower part form errors and higher part strength.

Originality/value

The methodology presented in this paper provides AM users a roadmap to predict the energy required for manufacturing a part. In addition, the optimization model will allow engineers to manufacture precision parts which satisfy their design specifications with minimal energy expenditure.
