Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how limited care patients and comprehensive care patients differ in terms of consumers' behavior in the dentist selection process, in order to help healthcare providers and marketers better promote their practice depending on their patient type.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 1,150 dental school faculty private practice patients who recently chose their dentist was conducted and 221 responded. The respondents were divided to comprehensive care patients (n=120) and limited care patients (n=90) by self‐perceived need.

Findings

The comprehensive care patients were younger and more likely to be highly educated, have a healthcare related profession, and have private dental insurance (p<0.001). The comprehensive care patients were more likely to use information sources such as clinic website, the internet, and the insurance directory (p<0.05), while the limited care patients were more likely to use other dentists. Comprehensive care patients put more value on attributes such as, the dentist is in my insurance network and convenient physical location (p<0.05). In conclusion, comprehensive care patients and limited care patients differed significantly in characteristics and how and why they chose their dentist.

Originality/value

Healthcare marketers can use this study's findings to better promote their practice by selecting appropriate communication channels and focus on attributes that consumers value the most. It is important to apply different strategies to different consumer groups.

Abstract

Purpose

The debate surrounding automating analytics processes continues as technology becomes more prominent and advanced in the workplace. Specifically, when it comes to HR analytics, it is important to recognize that human judgment as it is used in recruiting today is flawed. One tool that can provide further analysis and measurement beyond performance indicators and predictors is machine learning. Through automation, HR professionals may someday be able to compare characteristics, apply regression analysis to identify the influence of a characteristic and make adjustments based on new hires, retention and promotion results.

Design/methodology/approach

With more and more companies using artificial intelligence, it is difficult to see how it will revolutionize the HR process. As humans already have biases, will they transfer over to these artificial intelligence machines? Human judgment is already flawed in the recruiting process, so it is crucial to take a look into how it plays a role when AI is becoming built into the process as well.

Findings

Advancements in automation and HR technology are not slowing down anytime soon. As HR departments become increasingly reliant on advanced technologies and the numbers they produce, they also will experience the need for new skillsets required to deploy and use them. The HR process is rapidly changing, and as people, we must adapt now to see how AI is going to affect it. With a growing need for a center of expertise (COE) for HR data and technology, we will need to use this to focus resources on workforce analytics to drive business insights and recommendations.

Originality/value

This paper discusses the importance of understanding the implications of advanced analytics on recruiting and people management.

Young people in rural areas often face barriers when accessing participation opportunities in their municipalities. This affects their voices being heard and their ability to create change. Even though almost half the world’s population lives in rural areas, rural young people’s activism is often overlooked in the literature. In addition, when young people’s activism is explored in empirical research, conceptualisations of activism and methods are often not tailored to rural areas. This chapter, thus, adds to our understanding of young people’s activism in rural municipalities by drawing on a mixed methods case study including thirteen focus groups (FGs; n = 35) and a questionnaire (n = 106) with young people aged 13–17, and semi-structured interviews (n = 11) with teachers from one secondary school in a rural municipality in Germany. Five of the FGs were conducted and analysed by Year 10 students, adding unique insights into participants’ experience of activism. In this chapter, activism is conceptualised as one of the multiple dimensions of citizenship. Activism includes demanding systemic change, individually or collectively, which may include refusing to do things, aiming to prevent laws, raising awareness, and making consumer choices. Rather than being full-time activists, the young people in this study were engaged in only a few forms of activism, often carried out ad-hoc, part-time and in connection with other citizenship activities such as volunteering. Spaces for activism included online, the local municipality, everyday spaces such as the supermarket, and school. Participants experienced multiple barriers when engaging in activism including narratives of non-activist young people, age restrictions, power imbalances and few opportunities for creating change, particularly at participants’ school and in their municipalities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to describe the design and synthesis of two novel azo and imine chromophores-based dyes derived from two different aldehydes with intramolecular colour matching that are pH sensitive.

Design/methodology/approach

The visible absorption wavelength (λmax) was extended when azo chromophore was included in imine-based systems. The dyed patterns created sophisticated colour-changing paper packaging sensors with pH-sensitive chromophores using alum as a mediator or mordant. Due to the tight adhesive bonding, the dyes on paper’s cellulose fibres could not be removed by ordinary water even at extremely high or low pH, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. The dyed patterns demonstrated an evident, sensitive and fast colour-changing mechanism with varying pH, from pale yellow to red for Dye-I and from pale yellow to brown-violet for Dye-II.

Findings

The λmax for colour changing was recorded from 400 to 490 nm for Dye-I, whereas from 400 to 520 for Dye-II. The freshness judgement of food was checked using actual experiments with cooked crab spoilage, where the cooked crab was incubated at 37 oC for 6 h to see the noticeable colour change from yellow to brown-violet with Dye-II. The colour-changing mechanism was studied with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra at different pH, and thin layer chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and FTIR spectroscopy studied the desired structure formation of the dyes. Potential uses for smart packaging sensors include quickly detecting food freshness during transportation or right before consumption.

Originality/value

1. Two novel azo-imine dyes have been synthesized with a pH-responsive effect. 2. The pH-responsive mechanism was studied. 3. The study was supported by computational chemistry using density functional theory. 4. The obtained dyes were used to make pH-responsive sensors for seafood packaging to judge the freshness.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined the characteristics, motivations and satisfaction of volunteers for the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Weekend across a 10-year period. The purpose was to enhance our understanding of sport event volunteers, especially in the long term. This information and insight may be useful in light of ongoing challenges with volunteer recruitment and retention, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed and implemented an online survey, based primarily on the Special Event Volunteer Motivation Scale (SEVMS) and the Volunteer Motivations Scale for International Sporting Events (VMS-ISE). The sample included a total of 2,038 respondents – 1,086 in 2012 and 952 in 2022. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests; qualitative data provided additional insight.

Findings

About two-thirds of 2022 survey respondents were “repeat volunteers.” Volunteer characteristics, motivations and satisfaction remained relatively consistent across the 10-year period. These volunteers were motivated by a set of multiple, interrelated factors which the authors call “community-based altruism” – that is, the desire to help others driven by a sense of community involvement and pride. In both years, more than 90% were satisfied with their volunteer experience. Satisfaction was higher for individuals with certain characteristics such as being a repeat volunteer and volunteering with a group.

Originality/value

This may be the first scholarly article to assess volunteer characteristics, motivations and satisfaction for a major sport event in the same location across multiple years. While it focused on a three-day running event in a midwestern city in the United States, the approach and findings may be applicable to sport event volunteers in other contexts.
