Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to design a low-cost stress bimorph RF-MEMS switch which is the desired transmission area application.
Design/methodology/approach
The bimorph structure of the low-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of thermal oxide and gold are utilized to create the vibrating membrane. The effects of process conditions of low-temperature oxide deposited using the PECVD technique enable stress-free deposition of the key structural layer.
Findings
Scanning electron microscope images of the RF micro-switch confirms negligible stress in the released structure. The RF performances of this device exhibit isolation around 43 dB of up to 50 GHz in the OFF-state position and an insertion loss of less than 0.18 dB in the ON-state.
Originality/value
The finite element method results show good isolation of 43 dB and less insertion loss of 0.18 dB.

Abstract
Purpose
An electromagnet that can produce strong pulsed magnetic fields at kHz frequencies is potentially very favourable to exert a Lorentz force on the metallic workpiece. One of the applications of the pulsed magnetic field is the electromagnetic forming where the design of robust electromagnet is critical. The purpose of this paper is to design a robust electromagnet (coil) for high velocity electromagnetic tube forming operation.
Design/methodology/approach
First of all, an analytical model is developed to design the electromagnet and predict the aluminium tube velocity under the action of the estimated pulsed magnetic field. Next, the finite element-based numerical model is used to test the robustness of the designed coil and validate the analytical model. The coil is fabricated and implemented for free forming of aluminium tube. Experimental results of tube displacement are further compared with numerical and analytical model results.
Findings
The experimental tube displacement results are showing a good match with analytical and numerical results. The designed electromagnet has generated a peak magnetic field around 14 T at 20 µs rise time and deformed the aluminium tube with a peak velocity of 160 m/s. Robustness of the electromagnet under the action of forming stress is insured by numerical stress analysis and experiments.
Practical implications
Though the designed model in this work is for the 2.4 mm aluminium tube forming, it can also be used for different tube materials, tube dimensions and other electromagnetic forming applications with some modifications.
Originality/value
The research results provide powerful theoretical, numerical simulation and experimental support for the robust electromagnet design.

Abstract
The paper presents a comparative study of thermal properties of reinforced concrete structural elements. A total of 2 beams and 2 columns were selected from literature [1-3]. Thermal profiles of these elements were predicted using different thermal properties and were compared with the experimental results. The thermal analysis is carried out numerically using finite element analysis package, ABAQUS [4]. Comparisons of different analyses results have been made with the main focus laid on the effect of the boundary conditions i.e. prescribed temperature boundary condition, convection and radiation. During the heating phase, there was slight difference in the temperatures predicted using the two boundary conditions, whereas during cooling phase, there was a significant difference: the convective and radiation boundary condition yielded better results. A reduction in discrepancy between the simulated and experimental result was observed on using thermal properties as per the formulation in Eurocode2 which took into account the moisture content.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to present an advanced 2 D transient heat transfer analysis capable of accounting for the effect of spalling in terms of amount, location and time. The model accounts for moving thermal boundary conditions to comply with the changing member cross section. The discussed numerical model provides a tool to quantify the effect of spalling on the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams.
Design/methodology/approach
The implementation of the presented numerical model in an in-house code and its validation has been discussed. The thermal subroutine has been sequentially coupled with the mechanical subroutine (sectional-analysis) to compute the variation of sectional moment carrying capacity with exposure time.
Findings
The temperatures predicted while considering spalling were in good agreement with experiments available in literature. The presented results also emphasise the importance of considering the time of spalling. The results also show that the fire rating of simply supported beams is also affected by spalling in the compression zone.
Research limitations/implications
It should be acknowledged that the model does not predict spalling, rather is developed as a tool to study the effect of spalling. The model takes the information related to spalling in terms of the location, amount and time, as user input.
Originality/value
The paper quantitatively presents the effect of spalling on the predicted temperature variation across the beam cross section and the moment carrying capacity.

Abstract
Purpose
It is well-known that women scientists are few in numbers in prestigious research organizations and still fewer in leadership positions. The purpose of this article is to analyze how organizational gender inequality is rationalized by scientists so as to highlight how discourse on equality reproduces gender at the workplace.
Design/methodology/approach
Data was collected through semi-structured face-to-face interviews with the scientists in four research laboratories dealing with medicinal drugs and chemical substances. It uses discourse analysis by Foucault as a theoretical lens to examine how gender inequality is rationalized and the power relations behind it. It adopts the perspective that socio-cultural beliefs form the basis of gendered practices in organizations.
Findings
It finds that the scientists refuse to blame the organization for inequalities by delinking gender issues from the organizational domain. This delinking occurs through rationalizing gender inequality as “social”, through separating informal behavior from the “system” and perceiving women as “privileged”. Such discourses while keeping intact the rationality and meritocracy of the organizations/institutions, reproduce the ideological “public-private dichotomy” and the male dominance at the workplace.
Practical implications
The findings indicate the need for extensive studies in India highlighting how gender is done in organizations, exploring men's role in undoing gender and government initiatives to create a climate of gender equality.
Originality/value
It highlights how discourse on gender equality/inequality at the workplace manifests dominance of men and represents an intersection of Indian social, organizational and institutional contexts at workplace. It also calls into question the applicability of the western concepts of “individualization” and “gender fatigue” to the Indian context.

Abstract
Purpose
In this study, the tri-bological behaviour of the un-coated and diamond coated tungsten carbide was evaluated using the pin-on-disc test rig. The same was also tested on a lathe machine tool. This paper aims to compare the tri-bological behaviour of coated tungsten carbide pin with un-coated tungsten carbide pin it also correlates the wear obtained from the two machines used.
Design/methodology/approach
Experiments were performed using L8 orthogonal array and results obtained on a pin-on-disc test rig under dry sliding process were optimized through a modern optimization technique i.e. genetic algorithm (GA). The response surface methodology model (L8 orthogonal array) formed the basis for the development of the GA model, which defines the conditions of minimum wear, minimum coefficient of friction and minimum surface roughness for the sliding process of the pin-on-disc test rig.
Findings
Implementation of the heuristic approach for optimization of input parameters for the combination of tool material used for the turning process. The initial approach involves tri-bological testing considering the same combination. The set of experiments further performed, inferred that the results were similar and that the diamond coating enhances the life of the tool.
Originality/value
Successfully synthesized the diamond coating on tungsten carbide tool material. Implantation of the heuristic approach, i.e. GA to tri-bological tests to identify the optimized level of input variables. Experimentation involves the tri-bological testing whose results were confirmed through performing experiments on the lathe machine tool.
