Abstract

Purpose

In the denim industry, enzyme washing and its combination with stone washing are generally used to get the desired worn-out look. However, these conventional methods include high water, energy and time consumption. Nowadays, laser fading, which is a computer-controlled, dry, ecological finishing method, is preferred in the denim fading process. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of chemical pretreatment applications on laser-faded denim fabric in terms of color and mechanical properties. To eliminate the enzyme washing process in denim fading and to minimize the disadvantages of laser fading, such as decreased mechanical properties and increased fabric yellowness, various chemical pretreatment applications were applied to the denim fabric before laser fading, followed by simple rinsing instead of enzyme washing.

Design/methodology/approach

Two different indigo-dyed, organic cotton denim fabrics with different unit weights were exposed to pretreatment processes and then laser treatment, followed by simple rinsing. Polysilicic acid, boric acid, borax and bicarbonate were used for pretreatment processes, and laser treatment was carried out under optimized laser parameters (40 dpi resolution and 300 µs pixel time). Tensile strength was tested, and color values (CIE L*, a*, b*, ΔE*, C* and h), color yield (K/S), yellowness and whiteness indexes were measured to identify the color differences.

Findings

Before laser fading, 30 g/L and 40 g/L polysilicic acid pretreatments for sulfur-indigo-dyed fabric and a mixture of 10 g/L boric acid and 10 g/L borax pretreatments for the fabric only indigo-dyed were recommended for the laser fading with sufficient mechanical properties and good color values.

Originality/value

With the chemical pretreatments defined in this study, it was possible to reduce yellowness and maintain the mechanical properties after laser fading, thus minimizing the disadvantages of laser treatment and also eliminating enzyme washing.

Abstract

Purpose

Firefighters are exposed to high outdoor temperature and heat stress caused by metabolic activities during firefighting and should wear protective clothing to ensure their safety and health. Traditional firefighter protective suits are bulky and heavy garments with reduced thermal comfort properties since the fabric thickness and moisture barrier layers prevent heat transfer of the garment and cause additional heat stress. The aim of this study is to reduce heat stress by creating a new fabric design with silica aerogel membrane as a moisture barrier for three-layer fabric system.

Design/methodology/approach

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were produced with three different silica aerogel contents and used for three-layered clothing system as a moisture barrier for giving desired protectiveness and thermal comfort to firefighters. Different fabric combinations were designed using two types of outer shell fabrics, two types of moisture barrier fabrics, two types of thermal barrier fabrics and PAN/silica aerogel membranes.

Findings

The results show that a lighter fabric system with improved wearer’s mobility and thermal comfort properties (thermal resistance and moisture permeability) is achieved with the use of PAN/silica aerogel membrane as an intermediate layer compared to commercial thermal protective fabric systems.

Originality/value

Differently from traditional thermal protective clothing, which may not provide adequate protection in long-term heat conditions or when exposed to flash fire, a new thermal protective clothing has been developed to be used in extremely hot environments, providing desired technical and performance properties, ease to wear comfort.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a unique disposable bed sheet design which reduces infection risk and other related problems from patient to patient and others during staying period at hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

The unique disposable bed sheet consists of three layers which are laminated to each other by hot‐melt technique. Upper and lower layers are different weights of 100 per cent polypropylene produced by spunbond technology. Plasma technology has been used to make the surface of the spunbond polypropylene sheets hydrophilic. Additionally, thermal bond 100 per cent polypropylene sheets, which have hydrophilic surfaces already due to chemical finish have been also used as upper layer. As core layer, different weights of 100 per cent viscose sheets, which have high liquid‐absorption capacity have been used. All three layers have been laminated by hot‐melt technique using etylene vinyl acetate interlayers between them. Antimicrobial effect has been achieved by the impregnation of silver and antibiotic‐based chemicals onto the hydrophilic surface of upper layers. Quality control and performance tests of all these works have been performed according to ISO and BS norms.

Findings

It is possible to have very good liquid suction capacity together with superb comfort properties, thanks to its viscose intermediate sheet and excellent wetback values. Moreover, it is initially cheap, hygienic and has enough strength against breaking and tearing.

Research limitations/implications

Cheaper antimicrobial agents and different application amounts should be checked. Also, durability of the hydrophilicity given by plasma treatment has to be checked. Additionally, dermatological tests should be applied.

Practical implications

It is expected that the infection risk at hospitals will be reduced. Moreover, hospitals will be able to use hygienic bed sheets, which would be preferable to the hospital management. Additionally, this unique design can be used for patients at home or for injured animals in veterinary clinics.

Social implications

Additional staying period due to hospital infections and infections from patient to patient/hospital personnel/visitors/other people will be reduced. Moreover, it is expected that life quality will be raised and dead ratio will be decreased. Beside this, manpower loss and increasing costs due to hospital infections will be prevented.

Originality/value

Design is new and unique. It has practical and social implications.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this study is to assess the factors that influence households’ choice of cooking fuel in Bauchi State, Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 750 samples were selected using multistage area cluster sampling, of which 539 responses were analysed. Multinomial logit model was used to estimate the factors that determine a household’s main cooking fuel choice in Bauchi State, Nigeria.

Findings

The result has shown that income, location, price of firewood, hours of electricity supply and home ownership are among the factors that have a significant impact on influencing the type of cooking fuel to be adopted by households.

Research limitations/implications

The study cannot offer any explanation about the influence of time dimension on the pattern of household cooking fuel choice in the study area.

Practical implications

Implementation of policies to increase the income of households, ensuring the availability of clean cooking fuel source and the increase in the price of firewood will encourage households to switch from using firewood to using cleaner fuel sources such as kerosene, electricity and gas.

Originality/value

This study has contributed to the existing literature on household energy choice by conducting a micro-level analysis of households’ cooking fuel choice in Bauchi State where a similar study has not been conducted. The study developed approximately 13 hypotheses (out of which two were found to be irrelevant) and added one new variable to test the impact of the neighbourhood’s source of cooking fuel on households’ cooking fuel choice.

Abstract

The EU harmonisation has created changes in the military's formal and informal influence in the directions of decreased formal and informal military influence in civilian politics. The EU reforms have created changes in the mindset of the citizens, by creating changes in the security culture of the citizens and in the civil-military related political culture. The desired level of alignment has not been reached. Therefore, the study examines the areas where further alignment is required. Moving from Rebecca L. Schiff's concordance theory, the article examines the relationship between the Turkish military, the civilian politics and the society before and after the EU harmonisation process. It examines the effects of the EU harmonisation process on the changes in the civil-military balance of power, and on the related security culture and political values. The analysis focuses on: (i) increased civilian control and consequent changes in the policy of accountability; (ii) transparency building in the defence sector; (iii) parliamentary oversight; and (iv) the change in the political culture related to the civil-military issues. It also investigates the extent the EU harmonisation has achieved in building democratic civil-military relations in order to align with the EU standards.
