Abstract

Purpose

The study principally aims to investigate the relationship among work–life balance (WLB), job satisfaction (JS) and employee commitment (EC) among the railway staff by integrating the social exchange theory (SET). The study also explores JS as a mediator in the context of the new normal.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method sequential explanatory design was utilized for this study. The research instrument was administered to 533 railway employees, using purposive sampling to ensure reliability and validity. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the quantitative data and measure mediation effects. Additionally, 15 interviews were conducted with employees from three job positioning groups (A, B and C) to gain further insights into commitment-related concerns.

Findings

The study found that WLB and JS positively influenced EC, with JS acting as a mediator between WLB and EC. Furthermore, factors such as fostering friendships among colleagues, effectively managing work–life integration and recognizing the importance of job roles were identified as crucial in enhancing the relationship between WLB and EC.

Originality/value

The study includes SET to examine the social exchange process while considering WLB benefits as a reward from the employer and EC as the outcome of this reward. This study contributes by examining the effects of COVID-19 on the railway industry and EC. The mixed-methods sequential explanatory design gave a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between WLB, JS and EC. The study’s implications highlight the importance of implementing supportive policies, such as flexible work schedules and a supportive organizational culture, to enhance employee commitment and reduce attrition rates. The study emphasizes the significance of prioritizing employee well-being to achieve organizational goals and enhance organizational commitment.

Abstract

Purpose

Condition monitoring (CM) of structures is important from safety consideration. Damage detection techniques, using inverse dynamic approaches, are important tools to improve the mathematical models for monitoring the condition of structure. Uncertainties in the measured data might lead to unreliable identification of damage in structural system. Experimental validation is crucial for establishing its practical applicability. The measurement of dynamic responses at all degrees of freedom (DOFs) of a structure is also not feasible in practice. In addition the effect of these uncertainties and constraint of limited measurement are required to be studied based on experimental validation. This paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Proposed numerical model based on measured natural frequencies and mode shapes is found suitable for CM of framed structures in the framework of finite element model with limited dynamic responses. The structural properties, namely, axial rigidity and bending rigidity are identified at the element level in the updated models of the system. Damage at the element level is identified by comparing the identified structural parameters of the updated model of the system with those of the undamaged state. Proposed numerical model is suitable for practical problem, as it is able to identify the structural parameters with limited modal data of first few modes, measured at selected DOFs.

Findings

The model is able to identify the structural damage with greater accuracy from the noisy dynamic responses even if the extent of damage is small. Experimental studies, on simple cantilever beams, establish the potential of the proposed methods for its practical implementation.

Research limitations/implications

The greater random noise will lead to unreliable identification of structural parameters as observed. Thus, filtering of noise technique may be required to be adopted prior to consideration of the measured data in the proposed identification approach.

Practical implications

Requirement of higher modal data seems to be difficult in case of real life practical problem. Thus, simulation technique like condensation or SEREP technique may be adopted.

Social implications

Structural health monitoring of infrastructural system is significantly important. CM of those structures from global response with limited measured data seems to be an effective tool to ensure safety and durability of structures.

Originality/value

The modal testing and subsequent extraction of modal data have been carried out at the authors’ laboratory. The numerical code based on inverse dynamic approach has been developed independently with original contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to review the literatures on the effect of fiber length on the mechanical response of natural fiber composite will help the researchers to know about the perspective of the various natural fibers in making of composite concerning fiber length. The review summarized the work of the other researchers, thereby unambiguously précised suitability of a specific natural fiber for a matrix in use. Thus, one can identify the use of the same fibers–matrix combination to obtain composites with different properties with the control of fiber/matrix interface.

Design/methodology/approach

The review work proposes a new kind of diagrammatic representation that expresses the influence of fiber length. This work has not been explored before in this specific format. The chronology of work may help to select natural fibers for use in composites for a specific matrix.

Findings

The length of the fiber perception in terms of “critical” length decides the need for pre-treatment process of natural fiber to improve shear stress at the interface for various matrices.

Originality/value

The current review paper attempts to shed light on the association between the fiber length of natural fiber and the mechanical response of natural fiber composite. Moreover, it probes the concepts of critical fiber length as a persuadable factor.

Abstract

Purpose

Condition monitoring (CM) has become significantly important, particularly in the context of ensuring safety, reliability and future usefulness of civil infrastructural systems. Most of the age old structures require immediate attention. Nondestructive tests and/or load tests along with routine maintenance inspections are common practice. However, most of the NDT techniques are location-dependent and are conducted in a piecewise manner. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical methods incorporating inverse techniques are a global approach to identify structural parameters using dynamic responses. However, measurement at all degrees of freedom does not seem to be feasible, due to practical constraints. Parameter identification of structures based on limited dynamic responses like modal slope and curvature mode shapes at the element level in a finite element platform is proposed in the present paper. The structural property for each element is derived adopting a two-phase analysis process, consisting modal extraction and structural parameter identification. It is important to study the accuracy of the predicted parameters with the number of measured modes. The structural property is identified using measured responses at those selected MDOF.

Findings

The proposed method is demonstrated in detail with a numerical example. The method seems to be an attractive proposition as the results obtained are very accurate even with noise-contaminated data.

Research limitations/implications

However, for practical problems, the experimental validation is significantly important prior to its application in real-life problems.

Practical implications

The developed model seems to be feasible for practical applications after experimental validation, as it is able to identify the structural parameters from limited noisy dynamic responses in frequency domains measured for few modes.

Social implications

Structural CM is the need of the hour, particularly for infrastructural systems including buildings and bridges, etc. System identification with a global dynamic response at few measurement locations may address the issue of health assessment of structures, which will have great social implications with respect to safety.

Originality/value

The proposed numerical model is originally developed by the authors with judicial modifications and combination of earlier research contributions to achieve greater accuracy. Limited measurement and the effect of random noise with numerical example are considered for the successful validation.

The emission of greenhouse gasses, deforestation, and global warming occurred for unplanned developmental designs in most of the South Asian countries. The present study intends to make a comparative study between Bangladesh and the Maldives regarding the impact of pollution on economic growth. The developmental process of these two countries has been interrogated due to the absence of implementing the plan of sustainable development properly. These two countries have been chosen due to having dissimilarities of demographic structure and different developmental models. The density of the population in Bangladesh is the height of the South Asian countries. An unplanned developmental process, urbanisation, and industrialisation made the country highly polluted. Albeit foreign direct investment (FDI) and industrialisation helped Bangladesh to be promoted from a least developed country to a developing country, yet question raises about sustainable development. The South Asian tinny island state, the Islamic Republic of the Maldives has a tourist-based economic structure facing environmental disaster. The erosion of lands and growing air pollution have collectively made the island country jeopardised. This chapter will delineate the effects of pollution on economic growth both in Bangladesh and the Maldives. It will further shed light on application of environmental governance in Bangladesh and the Maldives.

Abstract

The Ukraine crisis, which began with Russia's military intervention, has violently jolted the modern world. The egregious Russian invasion of Ukraine, on the other hand, has arguably altered the trajectory of the world order. This whiff of war does not exclude any state because all states in the world system are economically, politically, and socially interconnected and dependent on one another. Bangladesh is also feeling the effects of the Ukraine crisis. The crisis has highlighted some challenging aspects of Bangladesh's foreign policy, testing the robustness and independence of its decision-making process regarding United Nations resolutions. Myanmar, like Bangladesh, has appeared befuddled in its response to the crisis. This paper examines how Bangladesh and Myanmar's foreign policy anticipated an unwanted labyrinth by the crisis, which made its moral credibility critical to some extent. Furthermore, the paper discusses how these two countries’ foreign policy trajectories became entangled at a difficult crossroads. We used secondary data sources backed up by scholarly works on Bangladesh and Myanmar foreign policy, relevant books, recent reports, and writings on the subject for this article. This paper also sheds light on Bangladesh's U-Turn in supporting and speaking out in support of the UN resolution on Ukraine's humanitarian crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze and give directions for advancing research in stock market volatility highlighting its features, structural breaks and emerging developments. This study offers a platform to research the benchmark studies to know the research gap and give directions for extending future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The author has performed the literature review, and, reference checking as per the snowballing approach. Firstly, the author has started with outlining and simplifying the significance of the subject area, the review illustrating the various elements along with the research gaps and emphasizing the finding.

Findings

This work summarizes the studies covering the volatility, its properties and structural breaks on various aspects such as techniques applied, subareas and the markets. From the review’s analysis, no study has clarified the supremacy of any model because of the different market conditions, nature of data and methodological aspects. The outcome of this research work has delivered further magnitude to research the benchmark studies for the upcoming work on stock market volatility. This paper has also proposed the hybrid volatility models combining artificial intelligence with econometric techniques to detect noise, sudden changes and chaotic information easily.

Research limitations/implications

The author has taken the research papers from the scholarly journal published in the English language only and the author may also consider other nonscholarly or other language journals.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this research work highlights an updated and more comprehensive framework examining the properties and demonstrating the contemporary developments in the field of stock market volatility.
