Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose an extended reliability method for an industrial motor drive by integrating the physics of failure (PoF).

Design/methodology/approach

Industrial motor drive systems (IMDS) are currently expected to perform beyond the desired operating conditions to meet the demand. The PoF of the subsystem affects its reliability under such harsh operating circumstances. It is crucial to estimate reliability by integrating PoF, which helps in understanding its impact and to develop a fault-tolerant design, particularly in such an integrated drive system. An integrated PoF extended reliability method for industrial drive system is proposed to address this issue. In research, the numerical failure rate of each component of industrial drive is obtained first with the help of the MIL-HDBK-217 military handbook. Furthermore, the mathematically deduced proposed approach is modeled in the GoldSim Monte Carlo reliability workbench.

Findings

From the results, for a 15% rise in integrated PoF, the reliability and availability of the entire IMDS dropped by 23%, resulting in an impact on mean time to failure (MTTF).

Originality/value

The integrated PoF of the motor and motor controller affects industrial drive reliability, which falls to 0.18 with the least MTTF (2.27 years); whose overall reliability of industrial drive drops to 0.06 if it is additionally integrated with communication protocol.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to extend a sensitivity-based reliability technique for the processors deployed in industrial drive (ID).

Design/methodology/approach

The processor provides flexible operation, re-configurability, and adaptable compatibility in industrial motor drive system. A sensitivity-based model allows a robust tool for validating the system design. Sensitivity is the probability of a partial failure rate for a distributed variable; sensitivity and failure rates are also complementary. Conversely, traditional power electronic components reliability estimating standards have overlooked it, and it is essential to update them to account for the sensitivity parameter. A new sensitivity-based reliability prediction methodology for a typical 32-bit microprocessor operating at 30ºC deployed in ID is presented to fill this gap. The proposed techniques are compared with the estimated processor reliability values obtained from various reliability standards using the validated advanced logistics development tool. The main contribution of this work is to provide a sensitivity extended reliability method over the conventional method directing toward improving reliability, availability, and maintainability in the design of ID.

Findings

The analysis shows that the sensitivity of the processor’s circuit increases due to increases in complexity of the system by reducing the overall mean time between failure upon comparing among conventional reliability standards.

Originality/value

The significance of this paper lies in the overall, sensitivity-based reliability technique for processors in comparison to the traditional reliability complexity in IDs.

Design/methodology/approach

During emergency calls out the technology enabled modes to have quick and timely response for the mankind. As human society continues to spend months together locked inside their homes, it leads to the entire change in the human lifestyle. This also demands the society and the government to get adopt with the technological concepts such as drones to handle this pandemic scenario in a more scientific and safe mode. The major constraints in the utility segment is the cost and performance factor of the drones. This paper aims to design a drone flight management system, which can be used to operate single or multiple drone systems in a wireless mode. The major focus of this work is to minimize the cost of drone flying systems so that it can be accessible to a more massive crowd. The technological design behind the drone has been discussed in detail with mathematical equations. Also the control aspect has been presented in this work. For comparative analysis three drone have been designed and their performance have been compared.

Findings

The multi drone is designed , modelling is done and implemented in simulation and hardware. Its having less weight and cost compared to existing drone models.

Originality/value

75% original, 25% of the basic clarifications are taken from existing works.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is an examination of the literature on team boundary activity to trace how team boundary activity has evolved as a construct and examine the dimensions of team boundary activity and their relationships. It highlights the need for a deeper examination of the dimensions of buffering and reinforcement, and why buffering and reinforcement are required. It presents the case of why it is important to study this topic and maps out areas for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews conceptual and empirical papers published on team boundary activity in reputed journals between the years 1984 and 2016.

Findings

The focus of research in team boundary activity has been on external interactions of the team (boundary spanning), and very few papers have studied the activities through which the team defines and defends its borders (boundary strengthening). These boundary-strengthening activities can be equally important for innovation and learning in externally dependent teams. Further, there is a need to clearly distinguish these constructs from other variables like team identification. Another area that has here-to not been researched is the relationships between the dimensions of team boundary activity. Last, there is a need to consider a wider range of antecedents, outcomes and moderators of team boundary activity.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is based on past empirical and conceptual papers, identified using search terms such as team boundary activity, team boundary spanning and external communication. Other related areas can also be explored for identifying variables of interest.

Originality/value

As opposed to previous reviews which focused mainly on team boundary spanning, this paper considers all dimensions of team boundary activity, with special focus on buffering and reinforcement. It proposes a 2 × 2 framework to explain the effect of boundary-spanning and boundary-strengthening activities on the achievement of team objectives. It examines the cyclical nature of relationship between team boundary activity and team performance. It highlights measurement issues in the area of team boundary activity.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the interpersonal interaction perspective of team cohesion, this study aims to examine the effects of team boundedness, formal coordination and organization tenure diversity on both task and social cohesion. The authors test for the interaction effect of organization tenure diversity on the relationships between the independent variables and the dimensions of team cohesion.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected from 111 software development teams and aggregated to the team level. Common latent factor test for common method bias showed no significant bias. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test all the hypotheses.

Findings

SEM results show that team boundedness and formal coordination have positive and significant association with both dimensions of team cohesion. Formal coordination was found to be a stronger positive predictor for task cohesion than for social cohesion. Organization tenure diversity was found to be a stronger negative predictor for social cohesion than for task cohesion. Organization tenure diversity in the team moderates the relationship between formal coordination and task cohesion.

Research limitations/implications

The data was collected using a cross-sectional design. However, the authors have mitigated the effect of common method variance by adopting both procedural and statistical methods.

Originality/value

This paper expands extant literature by examining the antecedents of two important components of team cohesion, task and social cohesion. The authors proposed and found that the independent variables have different impacts on task and social cohesion. This study furthers both theory and practice by considering team boundedness as a variable of interest and its impact on internal team dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

A retail brand is an asset of value to the stakeholders. Nurturing it enhances quality and stability of earnings. Franchising it across emerging countries provides an opportunity for growth. The challenge, however, is to ensure that the brand stays “connected” with the local markets and “relevant” during changing times. Current research is highly inadequate in guiding the retail brands to stay vibrant when traveling to emerging markets. This research aims to look at how a successful fashion brand in the UK is struggling to grow its retail business through franchise in the Middle East. While the opportunity is vast, the retail brand has been struggling for it has not stayed “relevant”. The paper seeks to present a framework for monitoring its performance so the retail brand can “stay alive”.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative research was done to understand the profile of the walk‐in customers, their shopping behavior, spending motives, and lifestyles. Quantitative research was done to ascertain how the retail brand was perceived in comparison with other brands in the choice set. Further, the study investigated if the shoppers’ profile and preferences varied across different outlets located in different malls.

Findings

By carrying out the analyses, distinct segments were deciphered. It has been noticed that the customer profiles for the retail brand studied varied across different retail locations. Variations in their shopping preferences implied that different merchandising and in‐store promotion activities are required at different outlets to connect with different segments.

Originality/value

The research addresses the gaps in existing literature. The study emphatically confirms that a retail brand franchised cannot take its existence for granted. The study also presents a framework – a dashboard of retail metrics, for measuring, monitoring, evaluating and rejuvenating the performance of retail brands.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past decade, plant extracts are ultimate green candidatures to substitute the expensive and noxious synthetic corrosion inhibitors. In this regard, this study aims to focus on evaluating anti-corrosion properties of green inhibitor Cyperus rotundus (C. rotundus), a perennial herb found throughout India.

Design/methodology/approach

The biocompatible components present in C. rotundus extract was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy analysis. The corrosion inhibitory effect of C. rotundus was assessed by impedance, polarization and surface morphometric study [atomic force microscopy (AFM)]. Density functional theory (DFT) study was carried using DFT/B3LYP, and basis set used for calculations was 6-31G (d, p) using Gaussian 03 program package.

Findings

Predominant components such as octadecanoicacid, ethylester, n-hexadecanoic acid, pentanoicacid-4-oxoethyl ester, cyclotrisiloxane, hexamethyl, cyclotetrasiloxane and octamethyl were identified from the extract of C. rotundus. Impedance study demonstrated that the addition of inhibitor reduces the double-layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. Furthermore, polarization studies indicated that the extract of C. rotundus acted as a mixed-type inhibitor with decrease in corrosion current density with increase in concentration. AFM study evinced the formation of inhibitor film on mild steel surface. The donor–acceptor interactions of active sites of predominant phytoconstituents were substantiated by computational analysis (DFT).

Originality/value

This paper deals with the inhibition effect of extract of C. rotundus on mild steel in 0.5M H2SO4. C. rotundus has a capability to adsorb on the metal surface, thus hindering corrosion.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effect of strategic human resource management (SHRM) practices on two learning outcomes, learning orientation and learning competence, which past research has seldom examined in the UAE context. SHRM practices consisted of four factors, namely, talent acquisition, learning and development, performance appraisal and developmental pay.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data was collected from 285 employees from retail outlets operating in Dubai. Partial least squares regression analysis using the tool, SmartPLS, was used to empirically validate the measurement model and test the structural model.

Findings

Findings reveal that SHRM practices talent acquisition, learning and development and developmental pay have a positive association with learning orientation, and learning and development and performance appraisal have a positive association with learning competence of employees. The path coefficient and total effects signify that learning orientation acts as a conduit to pass on the effect of the SHRM practices to learning competence.

Research limitations/implications

The sample considered for the study was from the retail industry. Furthermore, to generalize the findings of this research, cross-national studies should be conducted across various sectors and organizations.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research study is the first of its kind in retail firms in Dubai (UAE) to empirically test the association of SHRM practices with learning outcomes. Retail outlets can implement SHRM practices to improve learning orientation and learning competence in a highly dynamic operating environment such as retail industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the current status of knowledge management (KM) adoption in the Indian manufacturing organizations and to develop a comprehensive research model to investigate the impact of enabling conditions for KM and the impact of KM on organizational performance through structural equation modelling.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive research design is adopted and primary data are collected through structured questionnaire. In total, 251 responses were obtained from the top- and middle-level managers and the structural relationships in the research model were tested using the partial least squares method.

Findings

The results revealed a moderate adoption of KM by the manufacturing companies. Also, a significant impact of the enablers on KM processes is observed. It is found that Indian manufacturing is operating in labour-intensive traditional methods and KM is still in its infancy. The impact of KM on the performance is moderate and contradicting the extant literature, the impact of KM on innovation is found to be weak.

Research limitations/implications

The study is carried out in companies located in India and hence generalizing the findings should be done with caution. The sample is dominated by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which may have implications for the findings.

Practical implications

As manufacturing companies in the developing countries such as India experience a greater competition in the globalized economy, adoption of KM will perk up the performance of the organizations. Practicing managers need to create a culture that facilitates KM adoption. Policy makers shall support SMEs in technology adoption, R&D, skill development and so on.

Originality/value

Previous KM studies in India are fragmented and analysed KM processes and KM enablers in isolation. Also, the holistic studies on KM literature focussed only on one or two facets of KM. A study which investigates the interactions between KM enablers, KM processes and organizational performance and innovation is scarce. The scarcity of empirical studies on KM and a dearth of understanding of the KM concept led to this maiden attempt to provide a comprehensive understanding of KM framework in the Indian manufacturing sector. A validated structured questionnaire for exploring KM practices in the Indian context is developed. Though the importance of the influence of external factors is theoretically emphasized, an empirical investigation is first of its kind.

Purpose

The rapid emergence and acceptance of blockchain applications by investment professionals has made this study significant. The study aims to examine the degree of trust and acceptance of blockchain technology in the Indian financial services industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The decomposed theory of planned behaviour (DTPB) model is investigated using responses from 200 investment professionals to an online survey on blockchain technology adoption, and partial least squares structural equation modelling using SmartPLS 3.0 is used to analyse the results.

Findings

In general, the results support a DTPB and offer the best fit to the data. This study may have significant drawbacks in predicting blockchain technology’s acceptance by investment professionals. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the research instruments used in this study, which engage users in business settings, are equally successful in the context of investment professionals.

Research limitations/implications

In predicting blockchain acceptance by investing experts, this study may have significant drawbacks.

Practical implications

As a result of TAM studies, it has been determined that perceived usefulness is more essential than perceived ease of use. Therefore, investment professionals may have discovered significant subjective normative impacts on behavioural intention. Management must devise techniques for implementing blockchain technology in digital financial services that are compatible with users’ workplaces.

Originality/value

Users may benefit from this research by concentrating on blockchain acceptance to improve digital banking services.
