Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to see whether it is possible to learn any lessons from the application of simulation and modeling in the defense sector to be applied in the healthcare sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Two comprehensive reviews are conducted within two domains of “Military & Aerospace” and “Healthcare”. A general search framework with common features is developed, while allowing rooms for customization for each domain. A common objective is set to cover a wide scope of simulation methods and application areas. Further, reviews are not restricted to a limited number of journals or conferences; rather the relevant databases are searched while using some filtering mechanisms.

Findings

It is found that simulation has been commonly used in the defense sector(s). However, inconsistency in terms of the level of implementation in both the sectors is quite vivid. There is clear evidence that healthcare lags behind other sector(s), particularly in terms of stakeholder engagement and, consequently, in terms of implementation of simulation outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to confidential nature of the defense sector, grey literature (which in this case is likely to include a considerable corpus of classified material) has not yet been reviewed. The paper speculates on the impact this has on the appreciation of the uptake of modelling and simulation in this sector and could form part of future research.

Originality/value

This paper provides key insights into some challenges of applying simulation methods in healthcare, whilst presenting an up‐to‐date overall picture of simulation in two main sectors from an academic point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of the copresence of ferrous (Fe2+) ions and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the activity of an amylase enzyme during the desizing of greige viscose fabric for potential industrial applications. The removal of starches is an essential step before processing the fabric for dyeing and finishing operations. The authors tend to accomplish it in eco-friendly and sustainable ways.

Design/methodology/approach

The experiments were designed under the Taguchi approach, and the results were analyzed using grey relational analysis to optimize the process. The textile properties of absorbency, reducing sugars, bending length, weight loss, Tegawa rating and tensile strength were assessed using the standard protocols. The control and optimized viscose specimens were investigated for certain surface chemical properties using advanced analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).

Findings

The results demonstrate that the Fe2+ concentration and process time were the main influencing factors in the amylolytic desizing of viscose fabric. The optimized process conditions were found to be 0.1 mm Fe2+ ions, 3 mm SDS, 80°C, 7 pH and 30 min process time. The copresence of Fe2+ ions and SDS promoted the biodesizing of viscose fabric. The SEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, XRD and TGA results demonstrated that the sizing agent has efficiently been removed from the fabric surface.

Practical implications

The amylase desizing of viscose fabric in the presence of certain metal ions and surfactants is a significant subject as the enzyme may face them due to their prevalence in the water systems. This could also support the biodesizing and bioscouring operations to be done in one bath, thus making the textile pretreatment process both economical and environmentally sustainable.

Originality/value

The authors found no report on the biodesizing of viscose fabric in the copresence of Fe2+ ions and the SDS surfactant under statistical multiresponse optimization. The biodesized viscose fabric has been investigated using both conventional and analytical approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that can hinder employee performance. Thereof, this study also investigates the mediating role of perceived incivility and the moderating role of psychological capital (PsyCap) to address “why” and “when” employee performance is undermined.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 485 employees of hotel industry were gathered in two-time intervals (T1 and T2) by conducting a survey. The time interval gap between Time 1 and Time 2 was 15 days. The data of the respondents were analyzed by using Smart PLS3.

Findings

The results revealed that injustice perceptions led to perceived incivility, while organizational dehumanization and perceived incivility decreased employee performance. Perceived incivility mediated the relationship between interactional injustice and employee performance. Moreover, PsyCap played the moderating role in curbing the effect of stressor.

Practical implications

This study offers hotel managers a valuable insight to formulate effective strategies that can enhance performance and PsyCap amongst their employees, aside from minimizing stressors within the context of hotel industry.

Originality/value

This research contributes to literature by focusing on factors that can undermine employee performance. The study outcomes have essential implications for students, researchers and practitioners. The valuable insights facilitate researchers to focus on factors that lead to deterioration of employee performance, instead of investigating the often-sought employee performance increment factors. This study aids fresh research endeavor by establishing a new avenue for investigation. Hotel managers may find this study insightful to minimize adverse stressors that could deteriorate employee performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the theoretical lens of appraisal theory, this research aims to investigate the interrelationship between employees' organizational justice perceptions and counterproductive work behaviours (CWBs) through the mediation of negative emotions.

Design/methodology/approach

To this end, a sample comprised of 207 banking sector employees of Pakistan was utilized to test hypothesized relationships. The collected data were analyzed through the partial least structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

Results show that counterwork behaviours are influenced by distributive and procedural justice perceptions. The mediating effects of negative emotions were also statistically significant between procedural, interpersonal and informational justice perceptions and counterwork behaviours. No gender differences were found between distributive, interpersonal and informational justice perceptions and counterwork behaviours. However, the authors found that procedural justice perceptions of female employees are strongly related to CWBs as compared to male employees.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing organizational behaviour literature by empirically testing the hypothesized relationships using the theoretical lens of appraisal theory with advanced quantitative data analysis techniques.
