Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the potential of artificial intelligence chatbots in academic libraries along with the dangers associated with the technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature were sourced from Google scholar and Scopus database-indexed journals to assess the potentials and drawbacks of using ChatGPT (generative pretrained transformer).

Findings

The study found that ChatGPT can aid with technical and reader services such as answering basic reference inquiries, navigating the library website and assisting with research, cataloguing, classification and collection development. However, due to the risk of inaccurate query responses, misuse, limited comprehension, input limitation and technological reliance, it should be a complementary technology rather than a replacement for human librarians.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’ knowledge, this is one of the first articles reviewing the potential of ChatGPT in academic libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the collaborative potential of Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic Claude AI as an assistive technology in education and library services. The research delves into technical architectures and various use cases for both tools, proposing integration strategies within educational and library environments. The paper also addresses challenges such as algorithmic bias, hallucination and data rights.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a literature review approach combined with the proposal of integration strategies across education and library settings.

Findings

The collaborative framework between Copilot and Claude AI offers a comprehensive solution for transforming education and library services. The study identifies the seamless combination of real-time internet access, information retrieval and advanced comprehension features as key findings. In addition, challenges such as algorithmic bias and data rights are addressed, emphasizing the need for responsible AI governance, transparency and continuous improvement.

Originality/value

Contribute to the field by exploring the unique collaborative framework of Copilot and Claude AI in a specific context, emphasizing responsible AI governance and addressing existing gaps.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the transformative potential of Google Bard, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot, in reshaping contemporary library reference services and advancing information literacy.

Design/methodology/approach

In this perspective piece, a qualitative research approach is used to explore the capabilities of Google Bard within library contexts. Real-world case studies and insights are used to critically examine Bard’s evolving role as a virtual assistant, its impact on enhancing information literacy and the multifaceted challenges it introduces, including biases and privacy concerns.

Findings

The research reveals that Google Bard, leveraging natural language processing and machine learning, engages users in dynamic conversational interactions. It provides contextually relevant responses and personalized guidance, leading to an enriched library experience. The symbiotic relationship between AI-driven technology and traditional librarian expertise is highlighted, contributing to interactive knowledge exploration and collaborative learning.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by exploring the multifaceted impact of Google Bard on library services and information literacy. It uncovers novel insights into the integration of AI-powered chatbots in traditional library settings.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the integration of Bing Chat, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered conversational assistant, into academic libraries and its potential impact on reference services.

Design/methodology/approach

This study analyzes existing literature to investigate the integration of Bing Chat in academic libraries. This research focuses on its features, capabilities and implications for enhancing user experiences and addressing information needs.

Findings

The findings highlight that Bing Chat’s conversational interface facilitates more dynamic and context-aware reference interactions, fostering user empowerment and personalized learning pathways. The integration of Bing Chat with existing library resources enhances resource discovery, navigational assistance and engagement with visual content. However, challenges related to accuracy, privacy and algorithmic bias require careful consideration.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature by providing an in-depth exploration of Bing Chat’s integration into academic libraries, emphasizing its transformative potential for reference services. This study addresses ethical and social dimensions associated with AI-driven tools in library environments, offering insights into ensuring fairness, privacy and user trust.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the transformative role of Sora in education and libraries. This study aims to explore Sora’s capabilities and potential implications for enhancing learning experiences and enriching library resources.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an exploratory approach, this paper analyzes Sora’s functionalities, focusing on its ability to convert textual descriptions into dynamic video content swiftly and accurately. It examines the ways in which Sora can augment learning through interactivity, personalization and accessibility, as well as its capacity to digitize cultural heritage and promote literacy in library settings.

Findings

Sora emerges as a potential powerful tool for education and libraries, offering opportunities for diverse learning modalities, creativity and critical thinking. Its capacity to facilitate immersive storytelling and educational gamification holds promise for engaging users and fostering community involvement. However, ethical considerations such as bias mitigation and equitable access must be addressed to maximize Sora’s benefits.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding of artificial intelligence’s potential in education and libraries, particularly through the lens of Sora.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) image generators, specifically MidJourney and DALL-E, on education and library services. The study aims to understand how these tools can revolutionize learning experiences and library resources while also addressing the ethical considerations surrounding their use.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the technical foundations of MidJourney and DALL-E, highlighting their neural network architectures. It also traces the iterative refinement of these models and examines cost, accessibility and the unique prompt-guided capabilities of DALL-E 3.

Findings

MidJourney and DALL-E show remarkable progress in generating high-quality, photorealistic images from text prompts. The iterative refinement of these models demonstrates a trend toward improved creative output and user accessibility. DALL-E 3, in particular, allows users to guide image generation through prompt modifications, offering unprecedented control over the creative process. The study identifies potential applications in personalized learning, visual communication and research support in libraries, while recognizing challenges such as cost and accessibility.

Originality/value

This research innovatively explores AI's impact on education and libraries, detailing applications in personalized learning and research while addressing legal and ethical considerations.

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by records administrators concerning political impartiality by examining the case of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in the USA, which has faced reputational challenges due to perceived political bias.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a phronetic approach to resolve the ethical dilemmas associated with political impartiality in records administration. This approach emphasizes practical wisdom and ethical decision-making, offering a unique and effective way to address the challenges faced by presidential record archivists.

Findings

The proposed phronetic approach provides a means to resolve the ethical challenges posed by political impartiality in records administration, with a particular focus on NARA. By taking a transparent and impartial approach, agencies can minimize criticism and ensure their continued ability to equitably serve the public.

Practical implications

The phronetic approach offers a framework for addressing ethical dilemmas related to political impartiality in records administration, with potential implications for other independent agencies facing similar challenges.

Originality/value

This paper offers a unique perspective on the ethical dilemmas of political impartiality in records administration and proposes a practical and effective approach to resolving these challenges. It contributes to the broader discussion on the intersection of ethics and public administration.

This study aims to examine if students would patronize metaverse academic library (MAL) if it becomes available in Nigeria.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine if students would patronize metaverse academic library (MAL) if it becomes available in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a descriptive survey research design. The population was made up of 1,037 undergraduate in Adeleke University. Descriptive statistic was used to analyse data.

Findings

Findings indicated most students have never used virtual reality (VR) equipment, they are eager to use MAL for virtual academic research, library user education, accessing circulation services, reading serials and contacting reference librarians. The study concluded that MAL would be patronised by students if it is made available and therefore recommends that greater effort be made to make VR gear accessible and cheap for developing nations such as Nigeria.

Originality/value

The study is novel as it contributes to scarce research on MAL.
