Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between leader–member exchange (LMX) and employee discretionary work behaviors in terms of job crafting, innovative work behavior and knowledge-sharing behavior by focusing on the mediating role of psychological safety.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-source and multi-wave data were collected from 284 employees in the banking sector of Pakistan.

Findings

The findings reveal a positive relationship between LMX and psychological safety. Psychological safety, in turn, is positively related to discretionary work behaviors (i.e. job crafting, innovative work behavior and knowledge-sharing behavior). Moreover, psychological safety fully mediates the relationship between LMX and discretionary work behaviors.

Originality/value

Drawing upon the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study introduces psychological safety as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between LMX and three important discretionary work behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the influence of risk preference and information acquisition on outdoor tourism safety decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

Five hundred twenty outdoor tourists were surveyed, and data were analyzed using two-stage regression.

Findings

Risk preference positively affects tourists’ safety decisions for outdoor travel. The greater the risk preference is, the more likely the tourists are to make the risky decision of outdoor tourism. Information acquisition significantly negatively affects tourists’ safety decisions for outdoor tourism. Tourists who obtain information through social channels are more likely to make safer travel decisions than those who do not.

Originality/value

Risk preference and information acquisition are introduced into outdoor tourism safety research.

Abstract

Purpose

Coal is the basic energy and essential resource in China, which is crucial to the economic lifeline and energy security of the country. Coal mining has been ever exposed to potential safety risks owing to the complex geologic environment. Effective safety supervision is a vital guarantee for safe production in coal mines. This paper aims to explore the impacts of the internet+ coal mine safety supervision (CMSS) mode that is being emerged in China.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the key factors influencing CMSS are identified by social network analysis. They are used to develop a multiple linear regression model of law enforcement frequency for conventional CMSS mode, which is then modified by an analytical hierarchy process to predict the law enforcement frequency of internet+ CMSS mode.

Findings

The regression model demonstrated high accuracy and reliability in predicting law enforcement frequency. Comparative analysis revealed that the law enforcement frequency in the internet+ mode was approximately 40% lower than the conventional mode. This reduction suggests a potential improvement in cost-efficiency, and the difference is expected to become even more significant with an increase in law enforcement frequency.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the few available pieces of research which explore the cost-efficiency of CMSS by forecasting law enforcement frequency. The study results provide a theoretical basis for promoting the internet+ CMSS mode to realize the healthy and sustainable development of the coal mining industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Health and safety is an important issue in workplaces, and despite safety procedures becoming more strict, serious accidents are still happening within the UK construction sector. This demonstrates poor performance in the implementation of safety procedures on construction sites. One of the key challenges is the unwillingness of the site workforce, especially the subcontracted operatives, to adhere to safety provisions on construction sites. As such, this study investigates the strategies for enhancing safe behaviour amongst subcontracted operatives in the UK construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used exploratory sequential mixed method research, involving interviews and questionnaires as means of data collection, and thematic analysis, reliability analysis and exploratory factor analysis as methods of data analysis.

Findings

The study suggests that various carrot and stick measures are expected to be put in place as part of the strategies for enhancing safe behaviour amongst subcontracted operatives. These include adequate enforcement of safety practices by the management, operative engagement and motivation, commendation and rewards, site safety targets, leadership style and motivation.

Originality/value

Application of the suggested measures could enhance safety on construction sites, as it provides practical measures and solutions for inculcating safety behaviours amongst the site operatives who are most likely to be the victims of site accidents.

The purpose of this study was to create and validate a food safety survey for older adults.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to create and validate a food safety survey for older adults.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey was designed to measure food handling and consumption behaviors related to high-risk foods. Survey questions were also designed to capture behavioral constructs from the health belief model (HBM). The first administration of the survey was completed by 349 participants, 55 years of age and older. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess construct validity, and Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the internal consistency of the subscales generated through factor analysis. Two weeks after the first administration, the survey was completed a second time by 149 participants from the original sample. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to evaluate test-retest reliability.

Findings

Exploratory factor analysis yielded four factors related to the HBM (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived barriers and cues to action) and three factors related to food handling practices (handling of processed meats, food thermometer use with poultry and washing or rinsing poultry). Inclusion in a factor meant that the related questions measured the same underlying construct. Cronbach’s alpha for these factors ranged from 0.63 to 0.77. Modification of the survey following validation resulted in the development of a 44-question instrument that can be used with older adults.

Practical implications

This survey will next be administered to a representative sample of older adults to assess relationships between HBM constructs and food handling behaviors and is available for use by other researchers.

Originality/value

There are few validated tools that can be used with older adults to evaluate food safety risks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of service quality, as measured by the SERVQUAL model with extended variables of safety awareness and energy conservation, on consumer satisfaction. It also explores the mediating effect of energy conservation and the moderating effect of consumer residence of electricity on this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a quantitative research approach, with data collected from 1,004 respondents through a questionnaire from the household consumers of UGVCL. The survey measures service quality using the SERVQUAL model with the additional variables of safety awareness and energy conservation. The data is analyzed using structural equation modeling, mediation and moderation to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that service quality, safety awareness and energy conservation all have a positive impact on consumer satisfaction expect responsiveness. Energy conservation also mediates the relationship between service quality and satisfaction, indicating that when consumers perceive higher service quality, they are more likely to conserve energy and thereby increase their satisfaction. Additionally, the moderating effect of consumer residence of electricity shows that the impact of service quality and safety awareness on satisfaction is stronger for consumers living in areas with higher electricity rates.

Originality/value

The paper lies in its investigation of the impact of service quality on consumer satisfaction using the SERVQUAL model, with the inclusion of two additional variables, safety awareness and energy conservation. Furthermore, this study examines the mediating effect of energy conservation and the moderating effect of consumer residence of electricity on the relationship between service quality and consumer satisfaction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to incorporate these variables in examining the relationship between service quality and consumer satisfaction in the context of energy services. Therefore, this study offers a novel contribution to the existing literature on service quality and consumer satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on social influence theory, this paper aims to explore the influence of academic entrepreneurs on team innovation activities. The innovation behavior of academic team members is the key behavior in academic entrepreneurial activities. As a special entrepreneurial group, academic entrepreneurs' political skills play an important role in stimulating team innovative behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts a multi-level study design and takes as samples the paired data of 91 academic entrepreneurial teams (n = 475). Based on team cognition, it constructs a model of the influence mechanism of academic entrepreneurs' political skills on team innovation behavior and explores the mechanism of transactive memory system in this influence effect. The authors use HLM and PROCESS macro to test our multilevel model.

Findings

The results show that academic entrepreneurs' political skills positively impact team innovation behavior, and a transactive memory system plays a mediating role between them. Team psychological safety significantly enhances the positive relationship of both academic entrepreneurs' political skills and a transactive memory system with team innovation behavior. Moreover, with enhanced perceptions of team psychological safety, academic entrepreneurs' political skills are more likely to improve team innovation behavior through the transactive memory system.

Originality/value

The study explores the influence of transactive memory system on the relationship between academic entrepreneurs' political skills and team innovation behavior, with the team cognitive perspective derived from social influence theory. This provides authors with new insights on the complex dynamics at place in the team innovation process and offers implications for how we can fruitfully manage this process.

Abstract

Purpose

Railways are a well-known example of complex critical infrastructure, incorporating socio-technical systems with humans such as drivers, signallers, maintainers and passengers at the core. The technological evolution including interconnectedness and new ways of interaction lead to new security and safety risks that can be realised, both in terms of human error, and malicious and non-malicious behaviour. This study aims to identify the human factors (HF) and cyber-security risks relating to the role of signallers on the railways and explores strategies for the improvement of “Digital Resilience” – for the concept of a resilient railway.

Design/methodology/approach

Overall, 26 interviews were conducted with 21 participants from industry and academia.

Findings

The results showed that due to increased automation, both cyber-related threats and human error can impact signallers’ day-to-day operations – directly or indirectly (e.g. workload and safety-critical communications) – which could disrupt the railway services and potentially lead to safety-related catastrophic consequences. This study identifies cyber-related problems, including external threats; engineers not considering the human element in designs when specifying security controls; lack of security awareness among the rail industry; training gaps; organisational issues; and many unknown “unknowns”.

Originality/value

The authors discuss socio-technical principles through a hexagonal socio-technical framework and training needs analysis to mitigate against cyber-security issues and identify the predictive training needs of the signallers. This is supported by a systematic approach which considers both, safety and security factors, rather than waiting to learn from a cyber-attack retrospectively.

Abstract

Purpose

Road accident is a major threat to sustainable road safety, causing immense suffering and posing an increasingly serious global challenge, especially in developing countries. It is the leading cause of death, injuries and property damage. While vehicle driver-related factors play a significant role in accidents, poorly designed and constructed roads are also a growing factor. As result, this study aims to assess traffic accident problems associated with design-construction complications on Arba Minch-Jinka Road, Ethiopia.

Design/methodology/approach

From 2013 to 2021, a large amount of traffic accident data was gathered, and through actual roadway surveys at potential locations along the road, the data was associated with design-construction parameters. The analysis was done by adopting descriptive statistics incorporating comparative hypotheses, in which the individual and combined effects of design-construction issues were identified. Results revealed, on average, 76% of total coincided accidents along the study road were associated with design-construction issues. Exclusively, causing factors, i.e. roadway, driver, vehicle, pedestrian problems and environmental, contributed 7.65%, 77.78%, 6.17%, 6.05% and 2.35% traffic accidents, respectively.

Findings

Detailed and time-consuming data collection, investigations, analysis and assessments were used in the research to discover a strong association between road design-construction problems and traffic accidents. As a result, 42 black spot sections were identified, and 7.65% is exclusively caused from design-construction problems. Curved road sections led the surge by 42% from selected design-construction variable, whereas the remaining 58% was shared among four parameters. According to relative analysis, design-construction issues caused a 58.17%, 12.14%, 32.36% and 29.93% increase in accidents in combination with driver, vehicle, pedestrian and environmental factors, respectively. This is in an average of 33.15% escalated problem in a combination that raises questions about the sustainability of road safety.

Originality/value

It is essential to use scientific methodologies to evaluate traffic accidents and associated design-build discrepancies in developing nations like Ethiopia if we are to achieve sustainable road safety. The fundamental importance and value of this study is that it promotes accountability to the road design and construction, which are not frequently thought of as influencing factors in traffic accidents. This paper is original, and all references have been correctly mentioned, to the best of the author’s knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores how the blockchain food traceability system (BFTS) affects consumers' affective brand commitment and subsequent willingness to pay premium prices.

Design/methodology/approach

From February 11 to May 23, 2023, this study collected data from 236 Chinese customers, who had purchased blockchain-traced food in Jingdong Mall within the past three months. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data.

Findings

The main findings were as follows: (1) BFTS information transparency, information immutability and product diagnosticity are significant predictors of consumer-perceived trustworthiness; BFTS information transparency, product diagnosticity and product safety are significant predictors of consumer-perceived informativeness, (2) Perceived trustworthiness and perceived informativeness build consumers' affective brand commitment, (3) Affective brand commitment affects willingness to pay premiums and (4) Health consciousness positively moderates the relationship between consumers' affective brand commitment and willingness to pay premiums.

Originality/value

This paper complements the research on consumer behaviour in the BFTS, and the research results provide important enlightenment for guiding food enterprises to formulate reasonable and perfect marketing strategies of blockchain-traced food.
