Ford Mondeo "steered" towards Talisman component coating solution

Keywords: Coatings, Vehicles

Plascoat's Talisman 30 "drive" towards making the coating one of the most versatile, low-cost alternatives to polyamide (nylon) powders is said to have accelerated with its selection as the coating solution for steering components on the new Ford Mondeo.

The column components, which also feature on Jaguar cars, are being dip coated by specialists East Midland Coatings at the company's Hinckley, Leicestershire, UK base.

Around 30,000 components a month are being coated to a thickness of 800 microns and that throughput is likely to rise to 50,000 a month by the end of the year.

The general purpose Talisman 30 is one of a Talisman series of polyolefin coating materials which includes the Talisman 10 and Talisman 20 for such specific applications as dishwasher baskets and suspension file hanger rods respectively.

According to Plascoat, Talisman 30 is designed to meet manufacturer needs for a combination of hardness, abrasion and chemical resistance, and as well as automotive accessories and components, the product is proven in such applications as furniture and freezer baskets.

The company also states that the coating's performance benefits also include a pinhole- free finish, with Ford selecting black for the Mondeo component from a range of colour options.
