Bolivia party divisions point to turbulent election

Significance

Each seeks the recognition of the electoral authorities, which have hitherto refused to choose sides. However, a legal ruling by the constitutional tribunal is pushing the authorities towards recognising the faction backing President Luis Arce. Opposition parties also face internal divisions.

Impacts

• A further extension of the time limit for party registration will probably be required.
• The Morales faction within the MAS will take to the streets if its registration is denied.
